So You Want To Reset Your N97?

by EverythingBlaxx on October 7, 2009

Although we have posted guides on how to keep the N97 running great, preserving free space on your C: drive and how to remove any useless apps, the best way to get the device running just like it did when you first took it out of the box (minus the v10.x.xxx firmware of course) is to perform a hard reset. Anyone who has followed my 4 months with the N97 knows that I am frequently performing factory resets on the device. So many in fact that I can reset the device and have everything I need restored within 15 minutes…even if I’m mobile. It sounds pretty daunting but in putting together this guide, I found that there really isn’t much to it. Now before you all go run out and hit *#7370# then say that Blaxx told you to, I have to give a word of caution. Neither I nor N97Fanatics.com is responsible to anything that happens to you phone if you do a hard reset and you don’t completely understand what it is that you’re doing. This includes the loss of built in applications, the loss of any of your sensitive data (contacts, calendar, notes, emails, text messages, what have you), or in rare cases, bricking your phone. This is not me telling you to reset your device, this is just a rundown of how I go about it.

I decided around noon that I was going to reset my N97 tonight so the first thing I did was uninstall all of the applications that I don’t use on a daily basis and remove any hacks I currently have employed. The only reason I do this is because I install everything to E: Mass memory and after a hard reset, not everything is available in your Applications menu. Rather than worry about whether or not a particular app is going to be available after the reset is complete, I’d rather just reinstall them myself. The hacks are self-explanatory, they aren’t going to work after the reset anyway so why bother leave em there. Keep in mind that if you haven’t reset your N97 yet, you may lose a preinstalled widget or two (Amazon widget almost always bites the dust). I believe we’ve already shown you how to uninstall all the preinstalled widgets from your C: drive and reinstall them on E: so this shouldn’t be of any concern to you but if this kinda thing is important to you, stop reading here.

Among the other things you’ll lose are your contacts, your calendar entries and your notes. Text messages and emails are entirely dependent on which storage location you’ve selected and/or which email solution you’re using. I’ve found that the fastest way to back up my contacts is with Ovi Sync which is already built into the device. You just need to head over to http://contacts.ovi.com, log into your Ovi account (if you have one that is, you really should y’know) and add your device. Follow the instructions and you should be ready to sync in 90 seconds or less.

Its a good idea to sync those Contacts

It's a good idea to sync those Contacts

Contacts on Ovi can also sync your Calendar but ignore the other options on the screenshot above, they apply to PC Suite but not to Ovi.com.

If you’re anything like me, all you need to do is back up your Contacts and you’re good to go, more or less. I will sometimes connect to my PC and backup my Bookmarks, Notes and Text Messages (If you have Map Favourites, they should already be synced to your Ovi Maps account) using Nokia Content Copier (your phone already has a PC Suite sync profile built in but it will only allow you to sync over Bluetooth).

Ready to hit that # key

Once my device is all fresh and new again, the  first thing I do after completing the Setup Wizard is reinstall Handy Taskman, Best ScreenSnap, Y-Browser and one theme (whichever theme I’m currently using at the moment). Nokia Messaging, Gravity, Shazam, Ovi Contacts, Handy Blacklist and re-adding my podcast subscriptions can wait until I’m done reconfiguring my settings (Display, Phone, Admin, Security, Call, Bluetooth, Clock, Destinations).

Just to show you the benefits of doing a hard reset, I’ve prepared 2 screenshots for you. One are my system conditions before the reset, and one of after.

After

That’s all there is to it. I’ve regained almost 37MB of free space on C: that would be otherwise lost in just 15 minutes. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or you’re just unclear about something I’ve done here, I strongly encourage you to post them in the Comments section below.

    hi everyone

I keep getting an annoying "memory full close some applications" error message on my N97.
I am only running 1 email account on the phone.
I have the latest software update -- still keep getting that error. Any ideas?

My wife accidentally instructed the Nokia Ovi Suite to restore my N97 to October 2009 settings (hard to believe but a long story) which means that the calendar with 4 months of quite important data disappeared. What I did not understand is why I could not find anything more recent on the PC. Where is the data stored every time I synced the phone with the PC (roughly every two weeks)? Ovi suite seems to think the last time I backed up the phone is back in October 2009. There used to be a time line where you could view all text messages etc, I can no longer find that. In future I will use the online Ovi backup but for now I am really stuck.

    Hey Blaxx,

I saw that you're on the Rogers network as well; mind if I ask where you got your n97? I'm looking to get mine soon but am mainly concerned about the lens scratch and GPS issues, if I can trade it for another n97 or if I'll have to deal with red tape getting it fixed. How did you manage the problems with the camera lens and GPS? Have you ever had to send your phone in for repairs? If yes, how'd it go?

I'm still waiting for v20 firmware to come out before I get my n97. Hopefully by then there'll be more n97's with fixed lenses and GPS.

  • Hello,

Please,if someone knows there is a solution for the following thing:

So, i start with my contacts, at the names i have 2,3 or 4 numbers of telephone and when i synchronized the contacts with OVI it only save me on OVI the first number of the name.

Ex:in my contacts appears like that:
    John
    Mobile: 072...
    Telephone : 024...

After i synchronized,in OVI appears like that:
    John:
    Mobile: 072...

-THE SECOND NUMBER IT DON'T SYNCHRONIZE (OR THE 4,OR THE 5 ALSO DON'T SYNCHRONIZE)

    And the question is:

How do i do to save all the numbersthat i have on that name, nut just one number (without write every number separately)?

    Thank's a lot!
  • That's odd because I backed up my contacts on Ovi and it backs up all of the numbers tied to a contact. For instance, I have 4 numbers saved for my business partner (his cell phone, his home, and 2 work numbers). When I go to ovi.com and look at my synced contacts, if I click on his name I see his 2 personal numbers on the Personal tab of his contact and I see 1 of his work numbers on the Work tab. I only see 1 because that's all they allow space for on the website. However, if I restore my device, it will download all 4 numbers.
  • Thanx a lot man for the response,it really helped me!

    Have a nice day!
  • ParkCity
You don't like to back up Your settings etc. and after hard rest load them back?
  • No because if you check the 'Settings' option in Nokia Content Copier in Ovi Suite, it also tries to backup your applications. This causes major problems if you use Ovi Contacts, Nokia Messaging, Handy Taskman and a few other apps.

hi blaxx thanks for this very informative post. :)

    i have a question.

How can I remove folders in the menu screen? (e.g MfE folder and when I uninstalled the handy taskman to my phone the folder is left in the menu screen). Im just wondering if it is possible to remove these folders and how.

    thanks.
  • From your menu screen press Options -> Organize. Highlight the folder by tapping on the icon once then hit Options -> Delete

Thank you so much for this solution!!!

    thanks man! :)

    Hi daClaus,

    Thanks for the tip.
But I have a question, where can I find the contacts ? I mean, which folder in mass memory?

    cheers;
  • daClaus
    Wadisnake

You can find them in Others/Contacts if you have saved them via the Contacts application. Each contact is stored in a .vcf-file
The backup is stored in a hidden folder called Backup in the root of E: or F: and contains .arc-files for the selected options (e.g. contacts.arc, calendar.arc ...). I wouldn't mess with them.
  • You won't specifically find a folder or file called "Contacts.txt" but after the reset, the phone will be able to find it just fine. Mass memory is left unmolested after a hard reset
  • daClaus
Another way to backup the contacts is to copy them either to E (mass storage) or F (memory card), I do that everytime I change something in a contact. (I use a german ui, so maybe my translation will not correspond with what you see on your phone :-) )

Open the contacts app - options - mark - mark all - options - copy business card - to other memory - (select either E or F) (if you are asked if the existing contacts shall be overwritten just hit yes)

I also backup my most important data like calendar, contacts, messages and bookmarks frequently (at least before an update or reset) via the built in backup function. You can find it in programs - office - file manager in the last line, called Backup. Open it, open the first menu (something like backup contents) and select calendar, contacts, messages and bookmarks (NO settings, NO files).

This way I have all my information with me on the phone and don't have to rely on the network/ ovi suite/ ovi contacts or whatever, which usually tends to fail exactly in the moment that I need it most.
  • I specifically left out the on-device backup function because of severe problems I've had with it in the past
  • daClaus
Funny, that's why I don't use online Ovi contacs and calendar. Lost a lot of contacts because contacts on Ovi dropped a lot of information. Calendar on Ovi messed up my calendar due to some time zone and daylight savings issues although everything "should" have worked correctly.

Ovi Suite sync works like a charm, like it better than the PC Suite.
  • daClaus
AAAARGH! Just tried to set up Ovi sync to give it a second chance and it's not possible to set up my phone. I get the sms, but it only contains weird characters and I get an error message like "message is not supported". Tried several ways, always the same result. §&%@!
  • daClaus
Problem solved, seemed to be some problem with the SIM - N97 combination (though it used to work with the same SIM in my E71) . Used my wife's SIM to get the sms and everything is fine now.
  • izsmith
Thanks blaxx 4 the post. I've being thinking about doing the reset for a while know, but the only concern I have is losing all the access point passwords that’s been saved over time in the phones memory.

Is there any way to back those up?
  • I don't think you can back those up. I usually keep mine in a notes file on the computer, email them to myself, then copy/paste them onto the phone. That is still tedious but better than retyping them.
  • izsmith
Thanks Mike, I'll start keeping a record of them aswell;)
  • Nice write up Blaxx. Guess Ill be resetting the N97 tonight :)
  • Name
What theme are you using Blaxx?
  • Evo (Bold) by TehkSeven. It's the theme you see in the first 3 screenshots
  • I'm currently using Tehk's Symbian Planet theme which is a nice break from black themes (sorry Blaxx), but my all time favorite is Fissure.

By the way - my N97 needs a hard reset bad. For some reason all my widgets show a white screen. I guess something is wrong w/ my WRT. I think I'll just wait for the update instead of hard resetting now.
  • I bought Fissure at the same time I purchased Evo (Bold) but I like Evo better for now.
  • Just to be clear about the last 2 screenshots. No, Nokia Messaging does not use 14MB of RAM, although it certainly does look that way LOL
  • Again, nice overview. Just did a hard reset myself last weekend, and it gave me a big boost in available c: memory. Thanks!
