Nokia N97 vs. Omnia HD – Specs, Photos, Video

by Mike Macias on June 11, 2009

n97-omnia-hdA few weeks back I showed you the iPhone vs. N97 comparison -- now the Samsung Omnia HD goes head to head with the might N97.  This comparison means a lot more mainly because most feature the same operating system -- Symbian V5. It’s not often when Samsung ventures into the Symbian world -- especially since it has always been Nokia’s realm. But the way Samsung looks at it -- if you can’t beat them,  join them. The Omnia HD does excel over the N97 in some areas. For instance it has an 8mp camera with face detection. The N97 has a 5mp camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. I would love to see some side by side photo samples from both devices. The Samnsung i8910 HD smartphone also features a slighter larger 3.7″ screen and tv-out with HD capabilities. The N97 has standard tv-out and a 3.5″ screen. Both have the same resolution.

As you can see the Samsung does not have a keypad. Many find this a huge problem, especially with the N97 offering a beautiful qwerty keyboard. The N97 also wins in the storage capacity department with a whopping 32gb built in.

to be honest, the omnia wins with no hassles, its faster better looking, the screen is unmatched even the iphone cannot match it IMO, but the whole qwerty issue annoys me, the samsung has a full qwerty support built in. its even faster and better to use than the n97.
support wise samsung is catching on, with the whole updates and firmware stuff.
but in regards to software, both phones are exact same.
my i8510 was the same as n96, and it ran ever application just fine. i installed nokia applications from n96 etc and i have had no problems.
    this wont be different either.
i always loved nokia, but they stayed the same now for the past 3 years since the release of the n95. just software is diff. ok, the processor and other little things are refined aswell but the basics still same.
this time omnia wins hands down without any problems.
and i have used both phones. samsung is just a better phone builder lately.

Enjoyed article despite the slight tendancy towards the N97, nevertheless that is redundant as it is a Nokia fan site. Both great phone, the think the problem with the N97 is that Nokia didnt introduce anything exciting basically the exact same make up as the N95 which is depressing. The Omnia HD's AMOLED screen is maginificent and I havent even gotten to the insane processing speed for the new Samsung bench mark. The N97 insisted on having a thumb pad decreasing the size of the QWERTY keyboard thus minimizing the effectiveness which ahs proved to a major downfall as it does not compare to QWERTY keyboards on the like of the Touch Pro 2 or even the older E71. Other that the gorgeous 32GB of internal memory, a massive amount that the vast majority of Smart phone users will not be able to fill, the sleak, sexy and powerful Omnia HD
  • Wow, its a close call Mike, the Omnia wins hands down on the looks department - no doubt about that IMO. There is no major difference with the features as well. But the keyboard-less in the Omnia is its downfall. So, ya, I would still go for the N97. Great article Mike :)
