Nokia N97 Makes It A Movie Night!

by Timi Cantisano on June 20, 2009

The N-series has been synonymous with media since its introduction.  The N97 is not any different,  with the large 3.5″ nHD screen with a resolution of 640×360, 3.5mm headset jack for use with any standard headset, dual speakers and 32gb of internal storage with room to expand via the microsd slot.  While in the past I have never really had too much interest in encoding videos, the N97 had me jumping at the chance.  Lets see if this current flagship can handle the things that I throw at it.

I have been excited about watching movies since the release of the N95 but never really had a desire to watch it on a such a small screen (2.6″, I owned the N95-1).  The N97 is one of the first Symbian phones  to offer a screen that is perfect for movie viewing.    Naturally, its large nHD screen (640×360) makes it perfect for watching movies and I couldn’t start with anything less than encoding some high definition movies.  I chose to use sources that were either 720p or 1080p,  no less.  The Nokia N97 does not natively support most formats (mkv, avi, etc) so I had to convert the files using a third party program and changing the file format to mp4.  The original files ranged in size from 5gb-10gb and were able to be compressed down to around 1.5-2.3gb.  While the quality was superb and the device was able to handle the playback without any hiccups I did run into the issue of some movies not being recognized.  The N97 would see the file in file manager but it would not recognize in the video section and when selected an error message would appear stating that the file was not supported.  It turns out the N97 does not support video files over 2gb (with its native player, I haven’t tested third party applications such as Coreplayer).  While this wasn’t a major issue, just a couple tweaks here and there will encoding, but I think the N97 not supporting files larger than 2gb is silly.  The unit has 32gb of storage.  It is almost certain that most people will be putting movie files onto the device.  I don’t think that I am the only one wanting to see hi def videos on the beautiful screen on the N97 (or am I?)   Here are some settings I used to obtain great results.  Feel free to chime in with your settings if you’ve found something that works better.

The movie encoded flawlessly, I’ll list the specific setting below:

qualityforn97

If you are interested in a higher rating that is indeed available but once you start encoding the bitrate higher than 3000 you will run into the video stuttering and the file will most likely exceed the 2gb limit.  3000 seemed to have little if any issues while playing while 4, 5000 had noticeable stuttering.

audiochangeforn97

When the movie is converted the Nokia N97 plugs up via microusb and takes about 7 to 10 minutes to download the movie in mass storage mode.  Once the movies are loaded they are automatically refreshed in the Video section.  I played the movie through its native software and it looked amazing.  The picture was crisp and vibrant.  The movie had great sound. One thing to note about the audio is that there aren’t any settings or options in the native player.  While there are options for the video (natural, stretch, zoom).

Overall the unit performs well and I was happy being able to watch such great movies on the go.  However I do hope that in a future firmware update they uncap the 2gb limit on video files.

When I watched 3 movies (ca. 600MB) than message: "Memory full, close some applications". Crash of N97. I had to restart and wait some minutes = like with old computers to get start the phone again. What is this crap? How can Nokia create this memory Problem and how can I solve this problem?

Can someone tell why, after using the coding above, it keeps stopping at 20%, meaning i only get 20% duration of the movie on my phone. PLEASE HELP!!
  • Noel
I've just updated to the v20 firmware and all my MP4s which were encoded at 640x360 or less at 1024kbps all now stutter. Nokia, you really are bloody useless!

    Hi,
Can't we watch a movie on N97 without converting it?? are there no players which support the screen resolution of N97?
  • Chris
Hey guys I'm wondering if anyone can help, I downloaded The Godfather Part 2 from The Vid Store when I got my N97. It played great for the first hour and 6 minutes but then it suddenly stopped playing. Then when I looked to start playing again it had "disappeared" from tv & videos folder. I managed to find it in my photos folder under downloads but it still wouldn't play beyond 1 hour 6 minutes. I am stumped can anyone plase help?

Could some one please help me with my above post ?

Firstly get yourself a good video converter. I prefer the "imtoo" range http://www.imtoo.com/video-converter.html this will sort out your conversion to your phone.

Now your problem with getting a movie onto your computer.
I am guessing your not extracting this movie from it's source (DVD) ?
if so your needing another program to extract this that will mean you can then "extract" the movie from the dvd to the filesize and format you need striaght away. http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-ripper.html . If your using only DVD's for your "source" then you will not ever need the other program.

You would need to encode the movie to MP4 at the screen resolution 640x360 this program will do this.

Hi right im a bit off a retard when it comes to all this technical mumbo jumbo so i get rather confused. Now i have to main problems 1, when i put a film into my compter i cant seem to save it on to the computer memory then obviously the second problem would be converting and getting it on to my phone but i should really do one thing at a time. . .If you could explain or help me with any off this i would be really gratefull after all whats the point off having this phone if i dont use it to its full potntial.

im converting a movie from a dvd on ojosoft dvd ripper, how long should it take to rip and convert?
  • Name
How long does it take to convert it to the lower quality format???

Can the N97 play 350MB TV episodes?

I have the i8910 - and it can play 350MB episodes without a hiccup, if the N97 can do that then I'd prefer that as it has a HW keyboard.

    Great site and tips.

With the settings provided am using Video Converter v3.2.10.0518 they work flawlessly.

Trying to change the right key selection on the home page but can't seem to find the option on how to do so would be great.

    Thanks.

Progress report. I've now managed to get movies onto the N97, but only if i separate the film into chapters. It appears the statement re: 2GB limit on the N97 is true as the original film I donwloaded worked on my PC, but not on the N97 (it was 2.1 GB).

I'm currently downloading a movie with slightly lowered resolution etc, to see if that does the trick.

Any other ideas how OJOSOFT can be tweaked to get films over 2GB onto the N97, or which aspects of the conversion you guys tweaked to ensure the file fitted onto the handset?

The film does look good though so overall I'd say OJOSOFT is a good bet for getting movies onto your mobile.
  • buggedboy
Just got Ojosoft DVD - MP4, which seems to convert a 2 minute trailer in about 2 minutes, which works fine on my N97. However, the movie itself doesnt seem to download. Even taking into consideration it's much larger size, the "remaining" clock just seems t keep going up, whilst the "complete over" % just doesnt seem to be going anywhere fast. After 1 hour the download is still saying "complete over: 1% 107546K" and the time remaining is 64 hours and counting.

That doesn't sound reasonable does it?

@ stealthbloke i agree, the h.264 codec does not work on the n97, i've spent a week figuring this out. I'm now using a program called Super to convert movies to mp4 container, mpeg4 codec and they are working beautifully.
  • stealthbloke
Hi all, i have tried using this H.264 codec before for the N95 and have never got it to encode anything that works on the nokia, i have tried it again on the N97 with no luck so i'm sticking with the mpeg/xvid codec. Even the old videos i have for the N95 work on the N97, anything encoded for the ipod with the H.264 codec however does not work. My conclusion is dump the H.264 codec and use what works, the old faithfull mpeg/xvid codec.
  • xello
Hi guys, have any of you tried using this to convert an MKV file? I've tried several and every time the audio isn't converted along with the video so you get no sound...
  • dv_cool_fuel
I was able to keep the aspect ratio and the frame rate of 25 fps with the 640byX video size, the container was .mp4 and the video codec was xvid, this player very nicely, a single pass encoding took about the same time as the movie length on a celeron 2.4 processor, I haven't tried 2 pass encoding yet. Handbrake did a good job.
  • Althe Trucker
Hey - could you post the settings you used please ? I'm trying to do the same with Handbrake, and can't find a combination of settings that work yet ! I've tried about 5 different times with various codec and file types, and always get very poor results. I'm using a DVD that I've copied before using Makayama software, but they don't have a converter out for the N97 yet. I'm trying to go straight from the the dvd in the drive, without copying to the hard drive first as I don't have a ripper. Thanks !!
  • dv_cool_fuel
I copied over the working demo video on the phone, and I found out that it was mp4 and 360x240, using handbrake I encoded it at 800 kb/s in the mpeg xvid format and the initial test video worked, I am currently doing first full movie so I will report how it went after
  • Clint
HI Guys, I take back my earlier comment. Downloaded Ojosoft and used the same settings as Tom and then I could copy across using Mass Storage Mode. So Format Factory doesnt seem to be working using its standard N97 settings nor does N97 Video Converter.
    Stick with Ojosoft I guess.
  • Timi
Cool glad to see you got it working. OjoSoft may not be the most versatile, but it works.
  • Clint
No one has still really answered the question about how to, once you have converted your files, get them onto the N97?
I have tried so many ways but end up with the same result. The file transfers to the phone no problem. But onceyou try and play it you get an error message. The audio plays but with no picture.
The only way i can get it to work is convert the file using a 3rd party app then use the stupid Nokia Video Manager to transfer the file but it seem to convert the file again??? But then it works.

Is that what everyone else is doing?

By the way Mark, Format Factory works, I think its just the way we are transfering the files to the phone.
  • Timi
I transfer the files over in Mass Storage Mode. I have had issues with sound only playing from video files but usually the format wasn't compatible with the N97 (tried playing a sample clip from I8910, sound only).
  • Mark Bennett
what software is the above screenshots taken from in which a video is converted correctly for the N97? I have tried many, many different pieces of software & as yet I am either getting just sound & no picture or a delay between speech & video.
Help me please, I need a definate piece of software that will work.
  • Matt
I was having the same problems, just converted a full movie using Format Factory with the same setting and it works fine!
  • s0ndez
im having trouble putting films on my n97 ive got format factory could u tell me how to change the settings and what to put them on so the films work on my n97 i would b most grateful cheers
  • alexperez
every movie i try with the above settings does not work, have tried encoding 24 but this does not work, error message come up and then it plays with sound only, what can i do? have tried the ojosoft and videoora programs
  • alex perez
i have converted the superbowl in 720p file using the settiibgs above file comes out ata round 3.5gb have put this on mymemory stick and will not play any one know how i get this to below 2gb or how i can play the bigger one
  • Paul
My problem seemed to resolve itself guys.. I added a few video clips taken on my previous N95 and they showed up and then Sin City and Wanted showed up too. I have chucked a bunch of films on there now and the quality is great..

Kareem, I know what you mean.. my 700mb movies have been converting to around 1.5gb.

I think that is due to the frames ps and bitrate changes. If you check the file input and look at the output then you will probably be increasing it.

Try converting that 350mb movie at half the bit rate but with the rest of the settings the same and see how it comes out.
  • Kareem
Crikey. Converted using the guide above. A 350mb file comes out as 700mb!

There was me thinking it would be smaller then the source.
  • Paul
    Hey guys,

I have used the same software and profile as Tim C to create two movies. Wanted (which is 1.5gb) and Sin City (which is 2.2gb).

When they are loaded in mass memory NEITHER of them are viewable in the TV & Video shortcut. But if I go into file manager they are both in the Video folder and play flawlessly through Realplayer.

When I put Wanted on a 2gb Micro SD card I had lying about it was THEN viewable in the TV & Movie shortcut.

So why isnt TV & Video recognising any files I install to the video directory of the mass storage device. They can see the Star Trek trailer I got from OVI Store which is in the same directory as the 1.5gb and 2.2gb MP4's that I made.

    HELP PLEASE!!
  • Thank you for spelling everything out. I'm converting vids now for my trip tomorrow
  • Let us know how your trip went with your N97 to entertain you. Hopefully it lived up to your expectations.
  • Excellent article Timi. I can't wait to load up my N97 with more movies and tv shows. Too bad I can't get Amazon Unbox to work with the N97 - yet.
  • Tim
Thank you . Ive never used the Amazon Unbox service Ill have to check it out
  • As with Tom, I can't get my videos to play. I just get errors. I was using the Media Transfer mode. Should we be dragging and dropping the files? I used Videora N97 Video converter. (Free).
  • Tim
When I transfer movies I put the phone into Mass Storage mode. It seems to allow for faster transfers
  • Tom
hello what converter did you use? I converted to 277mb to mpg4 and it did not work what am I doing wrong any tips would be handy :) thank you
  • Tim
I used a converter by OjoSoft. I have also used Mobiola before on a different Nokia and that one worked just as well. Try OjoSoft there is a trial on the website. If the video is not playing than there could be an issue with the conversion file type, make sure that it is MP4 H.264. Hopefully that helps.
