N97 Screensaver: Get The Time On Your Screen When Phone Is Locked

by Mike Macias on July 8, 2009

One of the huge bummers of the Nokia N97 is the lack of a built in screensaver. Even popular Symbian applications like cClock and BigTime won’t work with the N97. For something like this we need a real expert in application development, Dr. Jukka. He has created a free application called Key Lock Clock for the N97 and Nokia 5800. While this isn’t a true screensaver, it meets our goal halfway with the touch of a button.

Check out the description:

Key Lock Clock is a free Clock application that is shown while the device’s key lock is on. The idea was inspired by the feature found from E71 & E66.

Wery simple to use, just click the application icon, set the “Clock screen” on, exit the application and lock the key lock normally. Additionally this application can be used as a Table clock when the charger is connected, to enable this feature just set the “Lights on while charging” on. also if you think that the screen lights are too bright, you can adjust it with the “Lights intensity” option.

This version was designed 5th edition touch devices such as 5800 & N97 in mind, but should work just as well with all Symbian S60 3rd edition non-touch devices.

Very cool! Now we ALMOST have a usable screensaver for the N97. Indeed it only works when you push the menu button and stays lit for about 5 seconds. It also shows you missed calls and unread sms/mms messages. Not sure if it does emails. I can’t get the “Lights on while charging” feature to work which is kind of a bummer. Maybe I’ll get with him to see if he can fix it. Another problem is it only shows a 24 hour clock, so I’m gonna have to get used to that after 12pm in the day. I can live with it for now since this is the only solution at the time.

This application is unsigned but can be easily signed with Symbian Signed which makes it fast and easy. Dr. Jukka has the details on his site.

If it happens even after Symbiansigned, remember to activate online certificate check (Settings --> Application Manager --> Installation Settings). If it is set to "off", installation will fail.
  • it is currently unsigned, thus you need to sign it yourself. anyway as soon as it is completely bug free I'll try getting somebody to sing it.
  • Hey guys. This application has been updated and works just fine. 12 hour time and the clock on while charging. Thanks Jukka!
  • Gotta check the charger, I only tested the charger with N97, maybe I should do testing with all devices I have to make sure that it works ok..also gotta make sure that the settings are actually updated always correctly to the background process...

Rather busy currently, but if it rains on weekend (50/60 chance really) I might get updates done then already..

If the site doesnt have a RSS feed link when you view the site on your n97, and does when you view it on you pc. Is it still possible to get the RSS on the phone?
  • thanks, I'll look into the 24-hours problem..
  • Thanks doctor! How about that charging problem too. Maybe I need to reboot the phone?
