N97 Freeware: Google Maps Is A Must Have Application

by Mike Macias on June 23, 2009

n97-maps-gpsUpon getting a new smartphone the first application that I install is usually Google Maps.  Having the ability to search for locations and business, see traffic info, and of course get directions is extremely crucial to everyone. With this free N97 app I no longer have to call “411″ for directory assistance, something that usually costs me a few bucks. Instead I can just launch Google Maps and type in what I’m looking for. If I need to find the nearest Starbucks it’s no problem. Once I find it I can call, get directions, check it out in street view, etc.

Keep in mind the application is aware of your current location via GPS. I’ve tested out the GPS on my N97 and it takes under 10 seconds to get a lock if you’re outside and about 20 seconds if you’re indoors but near a window. That is much faster than most standalone GPS devices that cost some serious cash.

Features Include:

- My Location. See your location on a map, even if you don’t have GPS.
- Business listings. Search for any business or category of interest.
- Driving directions. Thanks to My Location, you don’t even have to enter your starting point.
- Transit & walking directions. Get routes and schedules to travel via subway, bus, or on foot.
- Street View. View street-level imagery of businesses and turns in directions.
- Traffic. Real-time traffic helps you find the fastest route.

Here you can see a generic demo video by Google:

And this video shows you how street view works:

Lastly, Google Latitude is also included. This allows you to share your current location with friends and family. It even allows communicate with other Latitude users directly from the application. Check out the demo:

Google Maps for the N97 works extremely well and touch is perfectly implented. You can’t truly appreciate it until you see it on the huge screen. I attached a few screenshots below to give you all an idea of how it looks.

using the internal magnetometer, does the map adjust at all to make navigating easier?
  • No not yet but im hoping that comes in the next version.
  • Ya, OviMaps 3 is much more stable now. I think its actually better than NakiaMaps 2. I have been using it ever since the latest beta was realeased. I do agree that the first beta was way too unstable. I particularly like the Speed Limit warning feature, synchronisation with Ovi - ability to plan the route from the web, edit favourites etc. It looks really good.
  • thanks for the info man. I'm gonna install it 2nite and see how it goes. Hopefully the speed limit warning feature works in north america. the traffic alerts don't work yet.
  • True, I find it so easy searching for places in GoogleMaps than Ovi Maps 3. A totally must have indeed!
  • To tell you the truth, I haven't even used Maps 3.0 in a really long time. The first version was horrid so I removed it. Is it a little more stable now?
