Nokia N97 Firmware 2.0 Is Out! Update Now & Use These Tips

by Mike Macias on October 27, 2009

The new firmware version 2.0 for the Nokia N97 is finally out. You know – the topic we’ve been covering tirelessly the past few months.

As of right now you can only update via Nokia Software Update on your PC, however Over the Air updates are supposed to be coming in the next 24 to 48 hours. Follow the tips below to have a safe & happy update.

Firmware Update Tips:

  • The update is showing about 142mb for me so be sure to have a fast and secure connection before updating.
  • Always backup your important data before a firmware update.
  • I (actually EverythingBlaxx) recommend hard resetting your N97 before this update just to start fresh. Be sure to backup your important data like contacts, messages, & bookmarks before the hard reset. Follow the tutorial by EverythingBlaxx to learn how to hard reset the N97.
  • Do not bump the cable or disconnect your N97 until the firmware is completely installed.
  • Be sure to use a full battery.

Updates:

  • The entire UI is much snappier, bringing it up to power with the E71. Opening system apps is instantaneous.
  • The new firmware allows you to put your clock & profile widget anywhere on the screen. You cannot remove it, however. Screenshot…
    Scr000001

  • New message reader app reads messages out loud to you. I guess that was already there in v12.
  • This firmware version is only available for unlocked and unbranded devices right now. Branded devices usually take a few weeks to get the new firmware. Read how to debrand your N97 posted at this site a few months ago if you can’t wait.

I am currently in the process of updating my N97. I’ll update this post throughout the day with information about the new firmware. Be sure to share your experience in the comments below.

Michel I understand your anxiety. It seems to be ready though. I'm just guessing here but maybe localisation needs to take place? First reviews seem to be hopeful. Nog eventjes volhouden dus.

Worked perfectly, did do a backup, hard reset before install, but no issues and all looks good

  • ripper1012

So u did a hard reset? how/wat did you back up. Ovi suite or the Backup tool on N97 under the file manager app.

  • Daniel

Cheers… Did it, and now it's working… Too scared to turn it back off!!

  • ZiNiO

You lucky… Unfortunately I'm in the UK and still can't get v2.0 for my 0585162

  • ripper1012

Which program are you using to update the N97? Ovi Suite or PC suite?

  • ZiNiO

I think NSU would be the best…

  • http://twitter.com/talv talv

im in the uk on three and i just used benjezzy's debranding guide to get v12 and v20! i dont miss the operator branding at all, if anything threes branding just made the phone crash more frequently at the time!

  • trinitron

MAN!! I WANT YOUR THEME!!! HOW TO DOWNLOAD THAT?

  • selvavm

    Thx man…

  • Hodge

You can only use the Nokia Software Updater standalone right now, its not available on Ovi.

  • ZiNiO

    But 0585162 is unbranded one…

  • ripper1012

Still no update for me either. UK RM-505 0585162.

People who have updated .whats your Code / Rm number?

I updated to v20 in UK but now my fone is not recognised at all by ovi suite!!
I removed windows drivers too and reconnected it to my XP based laptop but still i cant reconnect to ovi suite (latest version 2) to do a backup of my settings!! What gives? Please email me back.

  • vidur

I meant to do a restore of my settings…why is this happening?

  • ripper1012

The 0585162 code seems to be the Uk Generic Black phone, but Nokia Only are releasing to others (like the Euro / argentina)

It seams the Uk codes even though are generic are after the other countries..

Anyone else had joy with 0585162?

  • SJ

Do you know when the update will be available in Indonesia? =(

  • Hodge

Load up the Ovi sutie without the phone connected, then click Connect Your Device down at the bottom left. Plug the phone in when it asks you too and it should work.

  • vidur

Thanks…tried that already and doesn't work!! This is nuts!

  • ouzy

where can i download this ?

  • http://twitter.com/benjezzy Amir B

    Try a Hard reset!

  • Kaspal

    NSU is your best choice…
after like 2 hours of intalling the new (bloatware) version of OVI Suite, updating phone drivers and shit, i got NSU to recognize the phone… and after taht, it took me like 30 mins to actually update the phone.

i dont know about you guys, but the process its kinda painfull, and besides the ovious kinetic scrolling, i've yet to see how the phone actually performs with this update… i hope it performs way better than before.

  • stubear

I'm updating now. I debranded my mobile and thank god i did as its still not out on vodafone (not happy!!) lets hope this fixes all my problems as literally over the last 2 days my touch response has deteriorated beyond a joke. as in i can only use the d pad 90% of the time!! SO EXCITED!!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Why does it feel like Christmas and Santa left his bag of goodies at my house? (Maybe cuz I spiked the milk and cookies)

    Firmware 2.0 here I come!!

  • Hodge

It's definitely a lot nippier, touch response is faster and having a unified kinetic scroll is pretty good. The only place it matters is contacts though.

It fixed my Facebook app not showing pictures, which never worked before this update for no apparent reason, but for some reason AccuWeather is no longer picking up a GPS signal. Will continue to battle with it and post back.

Overall, this is what the phone should've shipped with and we should now be receiving something a bit more exciting but c'est la vie.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Outstanding…I am knee-deep in testing out this new firmware…I think I just peed myself!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

A warning to those with an extensive music library. It seems to be taking quite a long time for the Music Player to 're-discover' my music. Not a real surprise nor a huge upset, since I have well over 15 GBs stored on there. Just be aware that it could take some time (or maybe it's just me).

    MD 7

  • stubear

well im having problems lol. admittedly my responsiveness was deteriorating. but i thought maybe an update would fix it. . . obviously not!! i have successfully updated to v20. and now, my d pad doesn't work. my menu button doesn't work, so all i can see is the homescreen. and the touch is still not working that well. Starting to think mine is hardware rather than software!! I have tried reinstalling the firmware and doing a hard reset and its still not working.. If any one has any ideas please let me know asap!!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Sounds like a Warranty issue, stubear. I'd contact Nokia Care and figure out how to go about replacing your device. I think Mike has covered some of how to do that in this article: http://www.n97fanatics.com/nokia-addresses-n97-…

    Good luck,

    MD 7

  • Kaspal

weird… i did a hard reset before installing this, and now it works flawlessly… and it took me like 30 mins to update my music lib.

  • Rich C

Finally!! Definitely faster. Kinetic scrolling I guess is cool, but as long as it's stable and fast, that's all that really matters.

  • http://www.asoclothing.com/ Bokia

I cant update because there seems to be an update for the pc suite software updater, and that wont install. tried it on two different pc's

  • http://www.n97fanatics.com Mike Macias

have you already tried a hard reset?

  • trinitron

WHAT NAME OF THEME ON THE SCREEN?????

  • http://www.n97fanatics.com Mike Macias

it's a wallpaper. I can't remember where I found it but I'll extract it for you guys and post it for d/l in an article soon.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Slightly annoyed at new setting…perhaps it can be removed; I'm playing around with it now.

when sending an SMS (text) message to someone that also has an eMail address, it asks me which detail I want to send the message to. Great idea for some, but just doesn't work for others. Like I said, I'm trying to figure out how to disable it (I've also been a little disappointed that it asks me which number to send to, if the contact has more than one, rather than just sending it automatically to the number I have labeled 'Mobile')

So far, I'm happy with the update though! Like the music player improvements.

    MD 7

  • glen

no additional space added in c: !!!!!!!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I have a suggestion, trinitron…first, use your inside voice. NO ONE LIKES SCREAMING CAPS

  • formidible

I think I'll wait and get an N900.

  • Maar

Updated , worked great. But this doesn't really do it … still rather slow and unresponsive. No extra widgets didn't even get a facebook widget. Not that I would ever use one but anyway…
I guess we are seeing the start of Nokia being replaced as the major phone maker..

    Sad.

  • N97Newb

When i was trying backup content before firmware update, i found out that my messages are stored on both, mass memory and phone memory! Please help me on how to copy all the messages to one place(mass memory). Thanks in advance!

  • glen

with fw v2.0, i installed hello0x2 and now im trying to unpack it but doesnt it just stuck in that screen….any help?

  • dsphenom

MD 7, You can set a default number/email/etc for each contact if they have multiple entries of each:

Contacts –> Contact Name –> Options –> Defaults. Set default for Voice Call, Message and/or Email. Once done the default will automatically be used in each case.

Note this was applicable for v11 and v12 but I'm sure also available in v20. Haven't upgraded to v20 yet as not available for my unbranded phone (Singapore).

  • Alex

Germany is also ready for V.2.0

  • Federico

hi, i'm going to buy the n97 on friday and i want to know a couple of things: i mainly going to use the music player and i would like to know if i upload 26 GB (6500 songs aprox.) is going to make the N97 slow. I also got 1300 photos from all my previous cellphones.

P/S: sorry for my bad english

  • sitati

Hi Federico, I bought my N97 just after launch, and here's my views:

    1. I don't think having a lot of music will slow down the phone – it may be slightly slower when going through lists of songs/albums in the music player, but otherwise there should be no change. It'll handle the photos fine as well.

    2. Take all the negative press with a pinch of salt; N97 is a really nice phone, just maybe not the godphone we hoped for. The firmware issues rarely pop up in my day-to-day use.

I recommend the phone, so long as you've read about it and know what you're getting.

Ps, UK sim-free model, still no update :(

  • http://www.asoclothing.com/ Bokia

I feel that what was written by Sitati was rational and well said. But if your going to have all that Id recommend adding at least an 8gb micro card with an option of 16gb. I have about 2000 songs and the amount of pictures are so small its no need to mention but just having 24 gb of free memory with all those songs and movies feels good.

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I've heard complaints in the cloud regarding a lack of memory boost as promised. I for one can attest that my memory may have actually dropped a few MBs…but then I heard @awysocki say that after a hard reset the memory jumped up quite a bit. Maybe this helps after installation.

    MD 7

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Not sure if this happened to anyone else, but I'm in Lebanon and just completed the update via the Ovi Suite (which I also updated yesterday) and my phone got its software updated without losing any of the applications or info… On clicking *#0000# I get that I have the new software and it's gone kinetic, but no info has been lost… Although I think I will perform a hard reset cause I want to have a fresh start and hopefully boost the memory, but in all cases kudos to Nokia for the process and for Ovi suite which has been getting more curses than praise!

  • Name

thought the new firmware was going to have skype doesnt have that other than that its ok since iv only had my n97 2 weeks

  • Daz

Running V2 most of todaya and quite imperssed, however I have noticed it has done away with all of my internet access points. No biggy for the wifi connections but my “Contract Internet” from vodafone and such have gone.

Not 100% how to get it all back running as at the miniute I have not internet on the phone! :(

Other than that it seems great, nice and responsive though the homescreen tends to be abit clunky and the widgets jump around abit when coming out of an app or closing the keypad.

  • dsphenom

Daz, to get your provider settings for Internet access (packet data) try the following with SIM card inserted:

Menu –> Apps –> Setup Wizard –> Select Operator

  • Daniel

I have facebook as a widget on my homescreen, and for some reason, every now it then it flashes white, back to facebook, then to white… I have hard reset the phone… Anyone having the same problem?

  • Federico

is it possible to disable the widgets that require internet connection (i don't have a plan for unlimited acess to interente 'cause here in argentina is very expensive)? does that going to make the phone faste?

  • http://phoneomenon.com/ Timi

Sounds like a lot of people are pleased today :)

  • PeedInJoyLikeMajorDouble

Yaayy!!!!! I just installed the firmware, works flawlessly! Kinetic scrolling here is waaaayyy cooler than in iPhone, I almost cried in joy. Moreover now I can make a SIP call directly to my IP-PBX. Just put the SIP address of your contact in the contact detail and N97 now automatically pops up a dialog allowing you to choose IPCall (yes, they call it IPCall(tm) now, as explained in Nokia's N97 site). Thanks a heeeappp nokia. iPhone is so 80's….

  • http://twitter.com/HookahGuru David Puffer

    Hey everyone,
I downloaded the new firmware to my phone and then did a hard reset. That's *#7370# to anyone who's wondering. I now have over 55mb of free space on C. I formatted my 32gb as well so I'd have a nice clean phone to play with. I installed MailForExchange but changed one MAJOR thing: where message are stored. Change it from C to E (Mass Storage). You can do this by going into Settings > Phone > Application Settings > Messaging > Other. Change the “Memory In Use” to E:MassMemory. This will seriously free up valuable space on C. Anyone else have an issue not being able to change the volume while on the home screen? I can only do it if I'm within the media player.

  • rolilord

After I upgrade to new firmware I do a hard reset with del-space-shift and turn on, and after that I have 60mb free on C, befor that I have 25mb.

  • richardhula

Seems that if you did hard reset (as I had to) after update then HelloOX2 gets stuck unpacking files after mapping. Others report it runs ok if you can get away with not doing hard reset.

Hopefully a fix for this in near future.

  • nevisindustry

Nothing for HK, either available, yet. Using RM-505 / 0586302

  • gires

Upgraded without problems. Best thing is all my installed programs, contacts, messages still function/are available without having to reinstall. No significant change in RAM amount. Averaging about 50MB. Cannot find the facebook client/widget though.

  • nevisindustry

I am following all your comments and trying to figure out how's the rollout of v2.0 done?! So far I can only guess that the higher your Code number, the less likely chance are to be able to upgrade yet.
I am using a phone bought in HKG with Code 0586302.
Does anyone have a clue / answer?
Would appreciate if those who successfully upgraded could post their phones code ( if you don't mind, that is ).
    Thanks!!

  • nevisindustry

would you mind posting your phone code?

  • nimal

    i cant update either…..my code is 0586199

  • dsphenom

Same predicament here…Unlocked/Unbranded Singapore N97 0586300. The 12.0.026 firmware release was only made publicly available for my phone about two weeks ago….go figure, so my expectations for a v20 release for this product code soon is very low.

  • http://www.bebo.com/martin577 Martin

Appears the new firmware IS NOT out in australia yet…will keep checking with nokia..got all exited too..

  • Ben

It is now. Got mine updated a few minutes ago.

  • http://www.bebo.com/martin577 Martin

nope..still v12 with me, i got rm 505..bought at optus unlocked..

  • daClaus

This firmware is NOT hackable at the moment. A hacked phone stays hacked after the update, but you can't hack your phone again after a hard reset!

  • daClaus

can't confirm this. I have more than 10MB more space available on C: with the same setup I had before the update, mainly because maps is already integrated in the firmware.
I'm now on 52MB free space on C:

  • daClaus

Well, I love it. One feature hasn't been mentioned anywhere: The pencil key is here! No Blaxx, not on my keyboard :-) , but copy/ paste function on long shift press.

  • HSH

I have updated my n97 to firmware 20 but there is a problem with the music library … when I press on it, it tells that the device is searching for music and podcast … I left it for 3 hours and it's still searching … Note: I do not have a lot of songs in my library … and there is another problem with the ovi store … when you want to scroll down using kinetic scrolling it open any application by just putting your finger on it … this really bad

  • alex.flack@live.co.uk

its done on regions if you guys really want to know.
Nearly all of europe variants are able to upgrade not sure about america. UK is not available.

  • nevisindustry

Thanks Alex, but would you happen to know the order of regions? West to East – North to South – Alphabetical?

  • Ripper1012

Right, i have just changed my Product code to 0570817, and bang! I can now update. I wanna wipe both the mass memory (due to having alot of programs installed to Mass drive that i dont want) and the Phone mem (hard reset) as recommended

Can anyone advise wat order to do this? both b4 update or after. Or a mixture.

    Thanks

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Dude, I personally wanted the brand new feel of the N97 so I would have preferred having a clean empty N97 after the software update. However when I updated it using Ovi Suite (the newest version of the Suite), when the update process was finished, I still had all my contacts, and pics and photos and everything without even restoring my phone… After I did a hard reset, the applications that were installed on my hard disk re-installed when the hard reset was done…

So if like me you want a brand new fee, I suggest you first format your HD, then perform a hard reset, then you update and your memories (both phone and HD) should be free! :)

    Hope that helped.

  • Ripper1012

Cool Thanx, am formatting mass storage now. and then will do hard reset!
Will let u know my findings!

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

No problem dude… It's a smooth process and shouldn't take too long… Good luck with that, and don't get too high on kinetic scrolling like I did!!

  • Ripper1012

    Cool thanks. Mass storage done.
Im confused thou. how do i do a hard reset? is it *#7370# or the 3 keys on boot up combi? which one would i need to do? / wats the difference.

    Thanks again!

  • Ripper1012

soz mate u might not have seen this..
Im confused thou. how do i do a hard reset? is it *#7370# or the 3 keys on boot up combi? which one would i need to do? / wats the difference.

    Thanks again!

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Hmm, the three keys combo doesn't work for me… I'm guessing it's cause I have an Arabic keyboard… I'd stick to *#7370# although from the sounds of it, they'd both do the same thing… :)

  • Hodge

Its country to country, some countries have different licensing laws so it takes longer to push through. Other countries the distribution is carried out by a 3rd party not Nokia themselves so you have to wait on them.
Unfortunately UK handsets tend to be two weeks behind the global release.

  • Hodge

7370 is a hard reset, returns the OS to its default settings but doesn't delete/remove anything.

Del+Shift+Space power on combo formats your C: wiping the memory and then restoring the default OS.

  • ramess

I did the hard reset before installing Firmware 2, but my photo and music does not work. It was the cause of hanging phone earlier, it is so even now. Any idea?

  • Spijo

I can't wait to get update my N97. Will do it this afternoon. I'm glad to see that many N97 users are happy with V2.0 firmware.

  • Ripper1012

Update complete. Kenetic scrollin is nice, but i need to get use to it! just doing a restore from nokia pc suite. Will let u know my findings!

  • Ripper1012

Well had a few probs with restoring bits. restored everything and memory C drive went down to 40 from 56. Think this is from the Settings restore thou?.. did another hard reset, then restored contacts/sms/ bookmarks and still have 54mb which is nice.

kenectic scrolling is V nice. agree with others on the others as bit snappier but have no Apps on it (as wiped both drives) does anyone have a good list of

key apps for the N97? the you shouldnt go without apps?.

    Thanks

  • daClaus

and exactly that's the reason why – especially after an update – you only should restore contacts, calendar, messages and bookmarks. When you also restore user files etc you restore all the crap that once wasted your C: space and slowed your phone down.

Restore your “personal” data and reinstall apllications, that's the way to go.

  • nokialouvre

Guys, just installed firmware 2.0, so k3wl!!!! But I'm having problem now — well, my bad actually — I don't know how to apply transition effect between clips in Nokia's MovieEdit included in this firmware. Pleeease heeelppp!!! Oh, and the SIP client r@wckz too, now I can receive calls in my office from the PBX directly on my kickazz N97.

  • weebz

Well the updater is still showing v12.0.024 for me :(

I changed my product code (“0570817″) ages ago to update to that firmware too, any ideas as to why v2.0 isn't showing in the udpdater? as it seems other people in the UK with my product code have been able to do so.

  • Ripper1012

how did you change? i used the guide here (which is a little simpler) and i had used the same method for my N95 so was more use the the software.

    http://www.nokian97blog.com/2009/09/change-n97-…

    took me about 4mins.
I changed to the same as u(below) which is the generic Euro black phone.
    0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black

Also make sure you use Nokia Software updater. As i beleve (as been mentioned above) its not avilible Via Ovi, only Pc suite /NSU. backup using the same software (and as daClaus said dont restore the settings.) and best to wipe both mass storage / hard reset the C; then install alll fresh!

    goood luck

  • weebz

Yeah I used NSS, (as previously used on N95&96) Like you say much easier than the guide on here.

I'm using NSU too, hence I can't get my head around why it's not working/showing the v2.0

Well I'll still keep on trying :D fingers crossed.

  • n97Support

If you change your product code after updated to v12…26 you most probably will not be able to update till a later date, as ns will still recognise the phone as a locked region.

  • weebz

Product Code was changed before update to v12.0.24 ;)

  • Ripper1012

I changed my Product code after. i was able to get 12 from my UK pro code. But changed it to the Euro one for 20. Very strange…

  • Ripper1012

Ok people. I have another Questino. if i do a Software update with V20 i have 3 options:
    N-Gage Application (6.1mb)
    Nokia Messaging 10 (2.4mb)
    Ovi Contacts 1.2 (2mb)

I thought these was already intergrated into the new firmware? if i install these is that just gonna eat away at my C drive? which is nicely on 55mb…

    NGage sounds ok but 6mb!!?

is nokia messaging / ovi worth it?

  • santiago

with the new firmware, is the N97 worth buying??

Well low and behold I changed my code to 0576350 (RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 White) and now v2.0 is showing :D

Currently updating firmware as we speak, happy days.

  • selvavm

The speakerphone issue (ie) voice breaks when using loudspeaker is not solved
It is very important to me………..
Does any one got it resolved

  • N97Support

weebz do you have a white phone or are just putting the white software on ?

  • N97Support

Yes like i've been saying quite a few times…. if you have the wuro one it will wor, its done by regions !
    trust me.

  • weebz

No I have a Black N97, just changed the product code to see if the NSU would pick up on the v2.0 firmware, IMO the colour is of no significance.

All seems to be working as it should, updated perfectly, love the kinetic scrolling, and even google maps 3.2.1 works without auto ending the application.

    HTH's

  • Hodge

NGage installed to the mass memory prior to v20, I don't see why it would change now. Same with Messaging.
Don't install Ovi contacts, it conflicts with a few things.

  • Kaspal

while its true that maps its already integrated in the update, when you use it, it asks you to update to a new version, that if you install it, will take like 8 Mbs out of your C drive.

same goes for NGage and OVI Contacts (this one can be disregarded, since its actually really integrated into the firmware update).

  • longdayslongnights

YAY i changed my Code from 0570817 To 0576350 And now its working :D

    Happy Days!

  • Kaspal

NGage install to the mass memory ONLY if you download the .sisx file from your PC and transfer it to your phone… if you do teh downloading and installing from the software update utility, it will install in the C drive and will eat up not 6, but somethin like 12 MBs.

  • Ripper1012

Thanks for your responses both of you. I am not sure weather to install any of them? Is the Nokia messaging any good. i was sure this was all intergated into the new Firmware but its obviouly not..

ill leave the Ovi contacts thanks to Hodge but not sure about the Messaging…

  • N97Support

v20 has now been taken off the NSU for your guys' info.

Unhappy to report that the 'Nokia Tune' bug still seems to be hanging around after this update. I've yet to do a hard reset (which I plan to do sometime today), but I don't know if that would fix it.

One other thing I've come across: Not sure if it's a glitch or new feature, but when accessing the music player from the homescreen widget, it brings you to the 'Now Playing' screen (normal). but when you push 'Back' it goes back to the homescreen, rather than taking you back to the current playlist/music category that you're listening to. To access that list you have to press Options –> Go to Music Library –> then select which list you are using (All Songs, Albums, Playlists, etc.). Not a HUGE deal, but extra steps are involved nonetheless.

Still very happy about v20!! I can't wait for Skype though…

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I agree with everything said here…I actually commented yesterday and it never posted (I think we overloaded Disqus!). Your English is excellent. Much better than some native speakers I know.

On a side note: The comments made about the 'lag' that may be experienced when opening a large music library have always been true for me. But just today I noticed that with the new firmware update there was no lag at all when I opened my music library of 10 GBs. Maybe just a lucky shot, but I think they improved that with the v20 firmware.

    MD 7

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Hahahaha…I LoVe the 'iPhone is so 80's' comment…I'm going to RT a portion of your post. And I see that you too, just like me, needed a napkin after DLing the v20 firmware. Cheers to that.

So SIP is finally here? Like all the way? Nothing held back by Nokia?

  • http://www.n97fanatics.com Mike Macias

buddy, do you do that SIP stuff? I need an article written about the new SIP or voip features. I have no idea how any of that stuff works.

  • http://www.n97fanatics.com Mike Macias

Maybe this feature isn't new, but I just noticed when I tap the album art on the Now Playing screen the volume bar comes up on the screen. Very handy!

    Was it like that before?

Small Tidbit: When plugging the N97 into your PC via USB cable, it seems to charge more consistently, rather than sometimes not charging at all, or only charging when there's a low battery on your device. Mine seems to charge each and every time I plug it in the USB via PC, regardless of N97 battery strength.

    Thanks MD7.

I checked NSU not hoping for much today an low and behold v20 is now available for my phone, code 0586300. The Nokia Support 'Can I update' website still indicates v12 is latest but NSU is saying v20 is available. Nonetheless, I'm downloading now.

I guess my complaints to Nokia support yesterday perhaps didn't go unheard!! :-)

Did the update last night and now have the following issues; 1. OVI Store won't load at all 2. Email setup says “Can't connect to the internet. Contact Carrier” but internet works via browser, go figure… 3. MAPS “Cannot open Application, install lastest version from nokia.com/maps” – Thought this new firmware was meant to have new MAPS??? Since purchase (3 months ago) the following issues have occurred; 1. Various applications failed had to do Hard re-set x2 2. Front cover protector is peeling off 3. Firmware upgrade (refer to issues above) – Sure it's got kentic scroll whoppy do! If I wanted and iPhone I would have bought one… I was truely hoping Nokia would have sorted out the bugs prior to release. I am now seriously thinking about selling it, am just over all the hassle don't have time for this crap!

  • dmtaylor

I tried for about 4 hours to update this afternoon. The NSU was updated with newest version, as was the PC Suite. The NSU saw that I needed an update, but as soon as I clicked UPDATE, it would lose USB connection. I followed the instructions given, clicked RETRY, and about 15 minutes would lapse before the program timed out with similar fault. I uninstalled the NSU and reinstalled it, no change. I hard reset the phone, no change. I have no issues connecting to the PC Suite. Not sure where to go from here…

  • Ripper1012

    Hey peeps.

Sorry to re ask this. Can any1 confirm my understanding that NOkia Email should be hard coded into the new firmware? i have the “setup Email” on my widget but when i do Software update it wants to install Nokia messaging at 10 Mb….

I thought this was already intergrated in?

    Thanks

  • Ripper1012

    Hi mate.

Try setting the phone to “automaticly” set to Pc Suite in the Usb options from Connectivity menu.

This helped with it “not conencting ” and disconnected when pluggin this in.

    Thanks

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Haha.. It's me again.. Yeah I too was under the impression that it was part of the update but apparently it wasn't installed by default with mine…

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Guys quick question that may make me look like a fool, but does anybody know how to re-install pre-installed widgets? I took out mine cause they were on the phone's memory and i thought they would re-appear after the update! I was wrong!

  • Ripper1012

Thanks for ur reply. is the nokia Messaging any good? I want it maily for Gmail.. as i will use Mail 4 Exchange to sync with work.

which widgets you after? Iplayer u can get again, accuweather from ovi or just google.

Also to add. Shouldnt there have been a newer Facebook app? Another thing i cant see Anywhere?!….

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Well I'm looking for mainly the facebook widget and the bloomberg one. But I would want to know if they can be installed on the mass drive instead.

About the Nokia messaging, I tried it. Not a big fan. It's a bit slowish, and feels heavy. Have you tried Gmail's little app!? Very cute and does the job? google.com/m on your browser, and hit more.

  • dmtaylor

Thanks, I'll give that a try. My current firmware is “V 12.2.024 05-08-09 RM-507 (c) NMP” if that makes any difference.

  • N97Support

Just to confirm, no its not integrated, hence needing to download. Just like n-gage.

  • Hodge

Have you actually contacted your carrier? When you do a firmware update you lose your connection settings, so Maps, ovi Store e-mail and any other bandwidth intensive application won't work. Your browser will be connecting over basic WAP that runs in sync with your voice package.

These error messages aren't just spat out for fun.

The “front screen protector” that comes on the phone at purchase is a flimsy piece of plastic intended to stop scratches in the factory, it's not a real screen protector. Its a half penny piece of plastic.

  • Hodge

Turn your phone off, take your sim card out. With the phone switched off, hold down del+shift+space and push the power button until the phone vibrates. Then let go of the power button but keep the other three pressed until the Nokia logo appears.

  • havde

A few days after the update: After rebooting the device it sometimes get stuck on the NOKIA screen (and sometimes the touvh input for PIN code doesn't work). If you go from an RSS feed on your homescreen, follow a link on to the web, it is not possible to press the links on the orignal webpage of the RSS. Kinetic scrolling in OVI store doesn't work at all anymore. My “Playlist DJ” is no longer working (it starts and then shuts down again). Kinetic scrolling is still not available in messages (I do a lot of emails and this would improve the device). OVI contacts which I have no use for is preinstalled. App Vlingo (voice control) is now pre-installed. Connections to internet are all screwed up, tries to connect to acces points I have deleted (hopefully a hard reset can help, but don't know how I can back up all my programs).

Aside from this, it is still not possible to set Opera as the default web browser (even if there are such settings…). When connecting as mass storage it automatically changes the storage location of messages to c:, this is not good if you are syncing with exchange, and the option to copy messages over when changing it back has disapeard.

All in all some good improvements (the best one is the long press on hardware keyboard to enable secondary character, thanks!), but as a business phone using MS Office and exchange I can't recommend this phone (not the prime target though, but still).

  • PeedInJoyLikeMajorDouble

Nope, now it's all out…. Nokia has sorted out all the issues that were keeping the SIP client from being included in N97 (technical and non-technical).

However some keypresses are needed to activate the SIP client on N97:

    (1) Go to the admin settings – SIP.
    (2) Once in the dialog press #77369*
    (3) A confirmation dialog will poop up, “enable IPCall?”, obviously press “yes”.
    (4) The phone will restart.
    (5) And voila new IPCall(tm) options will show up when making calls.

Eat that iPhone!!! N97 izt da king!!!

  • havde

Did a hard reset (twice actually, first one didn't really reset everything): OVI store gets an update and works fine again. And after re-installing Playlist DJ that one also works. Will keep testing and keep you updated.

  • dmtaylor

Still no luck. Seems that others are having similar issues. I'd hate to have to send my phone in AGAIN just to have firmware upgraded.

  • jbrsubscribe

Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, do we enter the code before or after creating the SIP profile?

  • Gene

Saw a couple ppl mention this on different sites, but I haven't seent this happen to me, even if I reach a song with any of the categories like Playlist, Artist, Album, etc. Have you tried the hard reset yet? I have, then started playing with Music Player. But unfortunately, lost my HelloOx hacks, including my browser cache in mass storage hack.

  • VIK

    (2) Once in the dialog press #77369* – does that mean I have to get to the Sip menu and then press the code? how can I do that?

    Can you sync the Calendar?
I have updated to v2.0 and installed MfE. the email sync just fine, but it gives an error when sync the Callendar.

  • maartenj

It will not connect to the internet anymore.
When I go to setup -connectivity – accespoints(bestemmingen) it comes back to me with systemerror. Now I can not tell the N97 how and where to connect to the internet… not sure what to do next.

Can it be because I changed prod code? Can I change prod code back to old? and will it work then?

  • Hans

I had the same problem, just do a hard reset, and your problem should be solved.

    Edgardo,

You are on Telcel network? If you are, do you have Amigo or you pay every month?…and how much is your month cost with unlimited internet?

I have Amigo but no 'monthly internet' package is available. You can buy only for 1, 2, 5, 7, 15, and 30 days…and for 30 days it cost 600 pesos I think. I'd like to get a plan with Telcel but I don't want to change my phone number. Any suggestions?

  • Name

I am also with Optus and am wondering what you used to debrand it?

  • LOLOLOLHAHAHA

Oh, my, gawd. I can't believe some people fall victim to the prank by PeedInJoy. I guess the people here are so dumb(ed down by Nokia) that they can't even smell the sarcasm in PeedInJoy first comment.

It's great that jbrsubscribe gave that link, but it's also a hard proof that Nokia has fooled you, again, guys. No SIP client in FW 2.0. Did they promise that? Yes (even if they tried to be sneaky by being vague, by only saying “VoIP support”). Do they deliver? No (surprise?).

So, can anyone tell us the score now (Nokia vs. N97 users)? Is it like: 3 vs. 0? Ha ha.

Oh, and to add an insult to injury: iPhone rawcks! Ha ha ha.

  • jbrsubscribe

Ok, PeedInJoy did fool me.. that's ok. However, thanks to that link, I am now the happy user of an N97 WITH a fully functioning SIP Client!
As for Nokia… seems to me they are a bunch of cowards, being dictated to by the Providers….
And the iPhone? Well, who cares!!

  • maartenj

Hey everyone. Has anyone found out where the new Ovi Maps Are? it should now have 3.1 Intergrated… but the only one thats there is 3.01.. is this another “intergrated” app like the Ovi Contacts and NOkia Mail which are all extras and not intergrated into the system therefore taking up C drive space.

The Ngage app although i installed from Sis file from the web still installed itselft to the C drive killing 6mbs… :(

  • BnThereDnThat

Ok, guys, so I have a maddening problem. I left my original Nokia USB cord in another country, and I've been trying to connect my N97 using a generic USB cord. And it doesn't recognize that it's plugged in… Is this a problem with my phone? Or has Nokia once again created a non-standard USB socket? No cord = no update. Oh, and I've tried to buy a new Nokia cord, but here in the UAE EVERY SINGLE NOKIA STORE doesn't have a CA-101. Bloody stupid crap.

  • DaveM

I did the upgrade to V20. No problems except “destinations” was totally screwed, which will affect internet connections. In my case, Google Maps wouldn't run. This happened on 2 N97s exactly the same. Check Settings>Connectivity>Destinations Can you check for new access points? Can you manage existing “destinations”. Mine was totally screwed up after the update. A hard reset fixed it. I suggest you all check it after upgrade to 2.0

  • richardhula

From Home Screen, Options/Edit Content then touch & drag clock up or down, then press Done – Simples ;)

  • Kaspal

thats weird, because while i dont use them that much, they DO work in my phone… unless the keypad its locked, or for some reason, when the music player is not on focus, it wont work, besides that, it works 90% of the times.

i recognize there are stuff to be ironed out (sometimes your remote controller wont work unless the music player is on focus… and so on), but its also true that the phone feel way better than ever.

    Federico,

You're English is not bad at all. From what I've experienced, having a large music library doesn't slow down the phone so much, but it does take a second to load it when viewing the whole library. Basically, when you open your library for the first time of the day, it might take a second for the phone to find all of the songs. After that it shouldn't bother the normal operation of the phone. If anyone else has a differing opinion, please share.

As for the extensive amount of photos, I would suggest putting those on another medium (hard drive or PC), or at least putting them on a micro SD card that you can plug into the phone. Not too sure, but that many photos may slow things down a bit (especially when trying to view them). Just my humble opinions/experiences with the N97.

There is again a embedded software added : Vlingo.
It so useless it need internet connection to understand your voice. not very smart , because the voice control is used to faster phone use , not to wait for a slow gprs connection to send your voice and receive data back.

There are several plans with Telcel. I got “Mas por Menos con Internet ilimitado 3″ And pay 679 pesos each month. It comes with unlimited internet and 200 minutes. Plus 6 numbers for unlimited calls/texting.

I also heard that if you put a 500 pesos card on your Amigo, it will give you 1000 pesos credit so you could buy the 30 day unlimited internet option and use the rest for calls. Not sure if true though.

What code did you use to unbrand your N97? Did it cause any issues? Should I revert to the original code afterwards?

    Thanks!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

    weymaster,

I actually didn't have to unbrand my phone. I bought an unlocked, Black N97 from Amozon.com and had a friend bring it down the Baja for me. I haven't seen Telcel carry the N97 yet (at least not here in Cabo).

As for the Amigo 500 card, you are partially correct. If you buy a 500 card you receive something like 900 pesos worth of credit…almost 1000. Those extra pesos are labeled 'bonus' credits (or something along those lines) and I'm not one hundred percent sure if you can use those for buying the internet packages…I'll have to look into it.

As for your ilimitado 3 plan, don't you get 200 minutes every even month? (Feb, April, June, etc.) And only 100 every odd month? Maybe the plans are different depending on your location, but here in Baja Sur that's how the plans are structured…didn't seem worth it to me.

thanks for your thoughts…I think I'm going to investigate the 'amigo internet' option, since switching to a plan might force me to change phone number (not something I want to do).

    Thanks again,
    MD 7

  • weymaster

Telcel is carrying the N97 now. Only at the CAC's though. I just got one and I'll be picking it up later today.

The plan I got (In Monterrey) gives me 400 minutes every even month and 200 on odd months. Check the website. They are labeled as “blackberry” plans.

I never had a smartphone before (or even any kind of advanced phone). I'm very comfortable with technology and understand how it works but I'm not familiar with the carrier settings that might be lost after the unbranding. Do you think it will be a problem?

    Thanks!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

I highly doubt that you'll experience any unwanted side-effects. From everything I've read regarding unbranding, it makes the phone a lot better. Besides, your SIM card will still be a telcel SIM card…my N97 has the 'Ideas Telcel' app in my applications menu. Those are the only services I can think of that Telcel offers that you would not want to lose. Otherwise, all of the Telcel logos and whatnot (at startup especially) would theoretically be removed…perhaps speeding up your phone.

If you are real concerned about any issues, I would ask some of the writers of this site about unbranding and recovery (if possible). But like I said, from what I've read, you'll be happy you unbranded your phone.

Blackberry plans work for any device? That's good to know…I'll go back and look at the plans again, since I didn't even pay attention to the Blackberry ones (you notice that the iPhone plans are way more expensive than other plans? This seems to be the case almost all over the world…iDon't indeed).

    MD 7

  • weymaster

They do seem more expensive but that's because there is a cost for the actual phone included in the fee.

My friend got the iphone 3gs (I think the 16gb one) paid 2400 pesos upfront and will pay 799 monthly for 24 months.

In my case I paid 6000 pesos upfront and 679 monthly, for 18 months (N97).

I don't really care about ideas telcel and all that stuff, I'm just concerned about the actual settings as I'm seeing people describing similar things after unbranding/updating. Maybe I'm not understanding correctly.

I will do the update later today anyway. Hopefully it won't do anything to the Internet configuration as I have to travel tomorrow and probably be away for a few weeks.

Thanks a lot for your help and I hope the plans they offer are convinient for you. Just remember the fair use policy: After 500 mb they throttle your speed down to 128 kbps until the period is over. The other companies do this as well in Mexico.

    Thanks!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

Yeah, the fair use policy seems to exist everywhere, and it can be a bit of a pain…if I'm not mistaken, your 'allowance' goes up the bigger the package you buy.

In any case, some of the settings problems you've read about (i.e. internet connectivity) are easily fixed and are caused by the update, not by unbranding (as far as I can tell…I haven't heard any negative posts about unbranding). My internet tried to connect to tmobile of all things when I first updated…I just went into the internet settings menu and changed it back to my preference of Easy WLAN and my internet connection at work. No problems. Some of the other random bugs seem to also be easily fixed with a hard reset. EverythingBlaxx has an article about how to do a reset in this article: http://www.n97fanatics.com/so-you-want-to-reset… and I plan on following his instructions as soon as I have time to backup my device. I haven't experienced any earth-shattering problems, I just want to make sure that my device is 'clean' and running smoothly.

Also keep in mind that the new firmware (v20) that we're all talking about probably own't be available to Telcel branded phones for a while yet…may be a couple weeks, maybe a couple of months. Nokia has to somewhat 'customize' the update for each branded version, which obviously takes some time (that's my understanding anyway).

Good luck, and thanks to everyone for the great comments.

    MD 7

  • cjn52

I've also had the problem with my 97 not being recognized by my PC. Tried different computers, different cables..evidently something in V2 is causing this. I've had to hard reset twice in the last week and never had that problem since buying this thing in June…this problem has been stated in other forums, so it could be a bug. I'm going to back up more regularly than before just in case

Hey Again! Thanks Much For The Reply.
I Have a Couple More Questions if you know the answers =)
(Oh btw Im 16, I Only Say This Because My Last Post Made me Sounds Like Im 7 Or Something. Haha)
Do You Know If Telstra Is Yet To Carry The N97? I've Been Hearing Yes And No. So Im Completely Lost On that One. Haha.
Is There Anything Wrong With The Old Firmware That Would Make The Phone Usage Horrible For Me, Even If All I Do Is Txt (alot) Take Photo's Bluetooth Things (Rarely) And The Occasional Phone Call, And I Think If I Use Do Use The Ovi Store. It Will Be Once In A Very Rare Moon. OH! Also I Have Games Downloaded From Mobiles24.com Quite A Few. Do You Think That Would Be A Problem At All? O.o
    Please Help.. Err Again =P
    Thank You!!

  • maelgwn

nah i didnt think there was a lot long with the old firmware it did what i wanted it to do ive only had my n97 for 3 weeks tomorrow i knew all this firmware was coming so i was able to research it and knew it was going to make the phone oh so much better and everything im reading on here and twitter everyone was happy and the update made every1 very happy campers my best friend has a n97 also he had his 2 weeks before me and he isnt going to update hes happy with his music and photos and what it does as it is…… my main reason for updating was i read here ( http://www.n97fanatics.com/skype-application-no… ) that skype was going to be included IT WASNT from what i can see but there is apps that will let me use skype account so summing up i think you will be fine as i said my mate isnt going to update hes happy as it is

  • BnThereDnThat

This problem of the phone not recognizing the cable didn't happen after 2.0 was installed: I've not been able to update because I can't get a cable connection. I can connect via bluetooth, of course, but that doesn't get me the update. I suppose I'll have to wait until it shows up in the over-the-air update list…

  • NinjahhKittehh

GREAT! Thanks That makes me real real happy!! I've been really worried for some time know. cos i didnt want to get it then have to spend hours trying to fix things etc. your really helpfull thank you =)
im guessing its more a personal choice then =)
got a couple more questions for ya then im done =)
i was just wondering if the facebook app already on the phone cost money to use. and the weather update app. (witch i think is already on the phone also? O.o)

  • maelgwn

1st thing i done was delete the facebook app (i dont use facebook) the weather app its ok with my plan i got 1gb data download p/m and i have wifi anyways and it connects to that just go to maccas or anywhere else there is wifi then it doesnt cost you anything there is heaps of apps out that will do the weather i use world traveler (psiloc) and i use tweets60 for twitter and nimbuzz for my skype/msn/gtalk and whatever else it does

  • NinjahhKittehh

its all good. where i work has wifi. hahaha.
thanks again for everything!! all i gotta do know is save for the phone. =P

  • cjn52

I would do a hard reset now and update. How can you have a device you can only connect via BT? Lotta things needed to connect for: maps, music, photos, etc…

  • weymaster

So I debranded my phone and updated to V 20. All the voice stuff works but not the Internet. Not even with Wifi. Whenever I try to connect I get a connection error. I restored the product code using NSS and loaded a backup back on the phone but for some reason I still can't connect.

I don't have the ideas telcel stuff on my phone either. I did a hard reset but no luck there. Whenever I open “Destinations” I get a “system error” messager.

    Any ideas?

  • Edgardo Yo Soy Telcel

    Hi MajorDouble7,
I was going to reply your comment a couple of day ago but I've beeing having problems to register on this site.
well regarding you question, I guess you can get the “plan mas por menos con inernet ilimitado” and you can keep your phone number, if you can bring a number from other company like movistar, I don't see why you can't keep it on a plan with Telcel if it's the same company, remember that now we own the number.

  • Edgardo Yo Soy Telcel

the ideas telcel apps it's installed in the sim card so you will get it any way and I don't use/need it at all, when i get my N97 from Dell Computers I just insert the sim card and the phone really impress me. A message apear after setting clock and location, that said: The phone detected your operator settings would you like to keep them YES!
and everything works al chingaso! (just fine)

Wonder when they will release it for Sweden code 0588301. I changed my code to 0575363 so that I could get the scandinavian v20 but now my keyboard is Danish which is not so good.

  • http://tcarlyle.wordpress.com/ thomas

Well, I think I'm having the same problem as mentioned by stubear. My touch performance was already bad and after making a hard reset and new install it seems to be even worse. Though I have installed a bunch of stuff: the black sketch theme, opera 9, mail for exchange, google maps and nimbuzz. Could it be that I've overloaded my N97 with apps and it is affecting its real time performance somehow? What do you guys say?

I'm also a bit worried if in case I bring to the service shop they will not just tell me that the performace is ok (as some very few times it is)…

  • N97Support

Only if you have them all running at the same time would it effect performance to an extent that its noticable. Is the screen just generally unresponsive (as in have to click reptitive times) or is it just slow ?

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

That's a good point, Edgardo…thanks. I think I'm going to have to look into getting a plan. I feel so limited with my N97 only being able to use WLAN! I want constant connectivity…isn't that what it's all about?

    Thanks again,
    MD 7

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

    weymaster,

I'm really sorry to hear that…I am honestly surprised that you've had issues…if you haven't fixed it by now, I would just suggest trying the hard reset again, re-installing the v20 firmware, and hard resetting afterwards.

If nothing else you can take the phone back to the store and exchange it for a new one…from what I understand, our warranty policies are pretty good for the consumer here in Mexico. Maybe someone else can answer this…but is there a way to uninstal the v20 and go back to v12? If so, you may want to do that and wait for a proper update for the Telcel branded phones.

I hope you can get it sorted…and sorry to hear the problems, mate.

    MD 7

  • weymaster

Well, I got it working again last saturday. I did another hard reset and it suddenly worked so no problems. Everything has been working fine so far… One more question, what email client do you guys recommend? I'm using Nokia Messaging but I think they will start charging after the trial is over. Is there anything else or will I have to pay?

    Thanks!

  • weymaster

Thanks for the info! The ideas telcel icon doesn't appear anymore but everything else is working.

    Cheers!

  • http://www.hamcityheadquarters.com MajorDouble7

(how long can we respond in this thread? haha…our posts are getting skinnier and skinnier :)

I've used a few eMail clients…I like Nokia Messaging fine enough…especially after they updated it with HTML support and proper touch functionality (touch didn't work all that well when I first used it). But you're right, they will likely charge you for it eventually. Probably a one time fee.

Profimail is a good client as well. When typing a name in the “To:” field it accesses your contact list and seems to be better at suggesting names than NM, but they both do well in that regard. Profimail is also available via trial, so you'll have to pay for that one eventually too. I've been thinking about buying it, and quite frankly, if I go to a plan with ilimitado internet, I probably will.

Gmail has an app that you can use…It's pretty good and all, and I LOVE everything Google, but I'm just not a big fan of their webmail setup. I think I've been using Outlook too long. And of course, unless you forward your other eMail addresses to Gmail (which I'm not inclined to do), you can only access your Gmail account.

Profimail seems to be one of the best solutions out there…for my needs anyway. The great thing too is you can disable an account and set schedules for them. With NM I decided that I didn't want my work eMails coming in over the weekend and had to delete the account completely from NM.

Noticed the following bugs in my n97 even after hard resetting and installing firmware2.0 twice:
-music player when launched from homepage widget, the “back” button doesnt return u to the former page in the application but instaed returns u to the homepage :/ . ( u can avoid this by minimizing the app then long press menu key and restore it, there it will work as its supposed to be)
-in firmware 12 , there was a “find” when u click on options in music player tracks list, it doesnt exist anymore ;( forcing u to slide keyboard out to look for a specific track or artist.
-typing a track or artist name to search for it within your library now only works with the first initials (unlike in v12 where u can type any word of the song and it shows u matching ones regardelss if its the 1st word or not)
-sometimes when lights out or key locked automatically, touch wont response at all but only after like 20sec or u have to restart phone for it.
-memory full error pops specially when keyboard was open even tho i have no app in the background

well , im getting frustrated day after day at the phone, i think updates were supposed to “fix” bugs, adding new features(like album thumbnails in musicplayer) but making new bugs isnt helping anyone at all. those devices were made to make life easier and to provide faster access to stuff, tbh im suffering here bcos this only added more and more unnecessary taps and clicks.

No it is unresponsive as I sometimes have to click many time. The problem is that it doesnt happen every time, maybe 60% of the time. I dont have the applications started at the same time, but I guess some run in background such as the facebook one or the mail exchange to synchronize every hour.

  • http://twitter.com/tcarlyle Thomas Carlyle

By the way, before the updated whenever I was using the internet the phone was first looking for a registered wlan and then, if it didnt find, it was connecting to the gprs. Now it seems to be always trying to use the gprs. Do I have some wrong settings or is nokia trying to make operators happier?

    Question for the experts..

if the operator for the mobile hasnt given out the new firmware, such as Vodafone, and you go ahead and debrand, then take in mobile to be physically repaired at nokia care centre..not software..is warranty still void?

There is nothing in handbook to state this can or may void warranty

  • Martin

Sorry, forgot to add, and i put on firmware not released as yet for device?..i have no problem paying if i must, but..1year warranty is standard according to consumer affairs

  • BnThereDnThat

    A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT.

Okay, so much of what I'll report has already been noted, but these are the ones that I appreciate the most:

    1) A huge improvement to Maps and GPS. The GPS now locks in within seconds, and the compass orients nearly immediately (using the lock-the-screen-then-wave-it-about method).

    2) iSync! iSync! iSync! ISYNC NOW WORKS WITH THE N97. I can't tell you how massive this is for me; it makes the phone something other than just a pretty accessory. (You've got to download a new plugin from Nokia and then restart your Mac. But it works, and works well.)

    3) My USB voltage and connection problems have disappeared. The phone now acts like my E71, which is to say without stupid problems.

    4) All the rest. Yea, yea, kinetic this and that, whatever. It's the improvements to functionality that matter.

Now, the question Nokia needs to ask itself is: why the HELL didn't they wait until the phone was ready to release it? Why the HELL would they put up with MONTHS of highly legitimate and extreme criticism of what should be their flagship phone? That's just bad business! And incredibly lame! All this stuff should have been there from the beginning. (Of course, I remember much the same from the initial release of the N95 … which leads me to ask: why the HELL would you repeat that fiasco??) To top it off, here comes the N900, which points to a future without Symbian … Now, if only they could make the Ovi store incredibly less lame …

I updated to the new firmware 4 days ago, and am very pleased with it so far. The phone's much faster and seems more stable. The only problem I'm having is – when trying to edit music files using the “song details” option, it freezes the phone and I end up having to restart the phone. I thought it was just a one-off, but seems to be a bug. Anyone else find this? I also wanted to re-install the firmware but can't seem to do it through NSU – it says there are no new updates available and doesn't give me the option to reinstall the firmware (like it did on firmware v12). Is there another way I can reinstall the firmware?

I am here too =( still with v12 firmware for N97… extremely tired of waiting for v20 firmware…
Mine is from Singapore 0586300 Black…
    C'mon Nokia! Hurry Up!!!

  • dsphenom

formuladoesnotwork have you tried checking if the v20 update is available via NSU rather than the nokia 'Can I update' website? I have a Singapore 0586300 black N97 too and was able to upgrade to v20 a week after its initial release. Even though the Nokia website indicated only v12 was available (which indeed was only released a couple weeks prior), the NSU said it was available for my phone.

Another option is to take the phone into one of the many Nokia Care Centers in Singapore, they actually upgraded my phone to v12 previously before v12 was available publicly for the Singapore 0586300 N97. They also re-installed the v20 firmware for me last week after I got my GPS and Camera fixed for a second time, which both work great now by the way.

    Hey All.
    Help Please =)

I Know This Is Going To Sound Dumb. And I've Already Saught of Asked Before.
So Sorry For The Half Reapeted Question.

I Talked To Allphones Today. (Witch Is Were Im Getting My Supposedly 'Unbranded' N97 For $830) And The Guy Told Me it Should Be V.11 Or V.12.
Is There Any HUGE Problems On Those Versions?

Also If I Do End Up Updating My N97 To V.20 Can I Just Do It At Work Over Wifi? Or Do I Need Something Special On My Phone Or On Computer? (I Know I Can Type In *#0000# And Then It Says What Version?) Sorry For My Incompetence. I Dont Really Understand The Version Stuff Completely.

Another Question. If My Phone Isnt Actually Unbranded. I Do Plan On Doing it As Soon As I Get Home From Allphones. Then Updating Straight Away. Will I Need To Do Any Hard Resets Or Backups Of Any Kind. If Im Going Straight From Allphones To Home?

  • http://waja3ras.blogspot.com/ Tarek

Ok i live in a country where branding does not exist, so I'm gonna let someone else answer that for you…

About the different versions in the N97… YES owning a v2.0 N97 is much better than previous versions… It's easier to use, does not freeze as often and is the bear minimum of what God intended of this phone to do… Updating it could work via wifi, but downloading the software Nokia PC Suite or Ovi Suite is easy to do and updating via those is not a hard task… Functionality wise the differences between v1.x and 2.0 is not that much, but it'll make your life a whole lot better if you have the most updated version…

  • formulawork

NSU said no update for Msia. JUst tried less than 1 hour ago. Same batch of product code as what you have in Spore except for moving last digit backward 3 times. Gonna try calling Nokia Care Centre tomorrow.

Someone please please please help me…
My N97 is currently v12 firmware (product code 0586300 Singapore Black)
-Since i am not in Singapore, can i update to v20 firmware from any nokia centre?

formulawork, any feedbacks from Nokia Centre on v20 firmware?

Not the best person to answer this (as I haven't needed to unbrand my phone), but it appears that you won't need to do a hard reset afterwards. However, there are people on this site that like to do hard resets all the time. So either way, you'll probably be fine (it probably won't hurt to hard reset anyway). But like I said, I might not be the perfect person to answer…let's see if someone else responds.

For those that didnt know RM-505 UK Nokia Firmware update now available.

I got a text message a few days ago saying it was available.
Used nokia PC Suite first to back up my phone, then used nokia software updater to go from V11 to V20.
No problems, no crashes, no loss of data.

    Outcome?

    1. Phone is much quicker ( i didnt bother with any hard resets or any of that stuff, i just make sure that all apps & images are saved on my memory card, not on any of the phones memorys). Applications are loading quicker, navigation between screens is quicker, messaging is quicker.
    2. Touch screen is much more responsive hardly any lag.
    3. New apps available, but havent really played with them yet, might update you when i have.
    4. Kinetic scrolling is there

Errors? none to report. I still have an error that i had when i first got the phone, which is when using the browser to surf the web. At random moment the browser will close itself. If i go to show open apps its still running and i can go back to it, but still, i didnt ask it to close.

Overall, phone is more stable, like how a product should be when you first buy it. Nothing to sing and dance about but a must have for all n97 owners. Hopefully the next software upgrade will have some sexy additions to it that will really make it special

Edgardo, hi, do you have a n97 with Telcel? the firmware you installed was with your phone unbranded? because i've been trying to update it and always says “up to date”, but with the 10.2.012 version, thanks buddy

    Eduardo,

I updated just fine with an unbranded N97 (and I use Telcel). If you're not
seeing the update via your phone's 'Over The Air' application, try looking
for it through the Ovi Suite program for your computer. There's a software
update option in one of the menus. I've also heard that people are having
more luck by actually going into a Nokia Customer Care center…but I'm not
sure if we have those here in Mexico (aside from D.F. probably).

If your phone is branded with Telcel, then there's a chance that the update
isn't yet available for Telcel branded phones. In which case you have 2
options. 1 being that you can wait for the update to be available or 2 you
can unbrand your phone using the steps provided on this site and then try
to update. Sorry, don't have the link to the article, but it should be easy
    to find.

    0586300….
Customer: Hello Nokia! When will be the update available in Singapore?
    Nokia: kri kri… kri kri…kri kri…
… I love the phone. Please don’t make me hate you any more!

jorge, have you checked via NSU rather than Nokia's 'Can I Update' website. I was able to upgrade my Singapore 0586300 product coded N97 to v20 via NSU about 5 weeks ago even though the 'Can I Update' site indicated only v12 was available (and still does). If you are really keen you can also take your device to a Nokia Care Point and get them to update it. They did for me to v12 when v12 wasn't publicly available, and re-installed v20 for me when the GPS/Camera lens was been fixed.

    Hi Egardo,

I tried to install new firmware but I always get:

“Downloading of the variant package failed. Most probably there is non-commercial software in your device”

I don't know what to do. How can i install the firmware?

    Thank you in advance,

    Saul
