Kinetic Scrolling Throughout Entire N97 UI Coming Soon… ?

by Mike Macias on August 7, 2009

One of the most requested features from N97 users is kinetic scrolling throughout the entire user interface, just like the iPhone. Nokia has already perfected this in the N97 web browser, now they just need to apply it to every single screen on the N97. The same goes for the Nokia 5800. Thanks to a innocent little tweet by my twitter pal Lenny (aka @the_truth34) we now know that Nokia is at least looking into this option of adding kinetic scrolling to the N97.

Earlier today @the_truth34 tweeted the following….

Just got my black n97 and saw person in flagship store with full kinetic scrolling throughout said it was a beta software.

n97-kinetic-scrolling

That’s great news for all Nokia N97 users. Will they actually implement this into a firmware update? Who knows, really. I guess only time will tell.

Get A Look At Kinetic Scrolling On Symbian S60v5

In the video below you can see kinetic scrolling in the Contacts and Messaging applications of the upcoming Nokia 5530 XpressMusic device. You’ll also notice the transitions are more polished and the software seems extremely snappy.

Wow that video makes me jealous.

Do you think this will come in the next N97 firmware update? I sure hope so. Afterall, the N97 is Nokia’s flagship device.

cant wait for kinetic scroling! looks well amazing =] getting my nokia n97 on wednesday this week, looking forward to it! ready really bad reviews. but they were really biased against all nokia phones, i eventually found a reputable reviewer and it got a really good right up! i really hope they overclock the cpu to about 600Mhz to match the iphone! =]
  • Also a lot of those reviews were on old firmware, and that is Nokia's fault for released unstable firmware. The newest firmware is 10x better and the difference is like night and day. Next firmware will be even better!

Ahh really? so they were all done on v10.xxx? whats the new firmware like then? whats the benefits compared to the slurry that ive been reading about the n97? like how its doomed, awefull and all sorts of dreadfull things which worry me since i have bought one!! :S what do u think will be in the next firmware? Thanks
  • Well the current firmware is much more stable all around. No new features have been added, but it's able to keep more apps open at once and most of the bugs have been worked out. It's also much snappier now.

The next firmware should have kinetic scrolling, I'm hoping more menu/UI transition effects, more snappy, and hopefully the Skype app that they've been promising.

Of course all of that is just rumors, time will tell.

To see info on the latest firmware check the article below:

Ahh. sounds good! ill get it and update it as soon as it comes xD i bought it unbranded and unlocked. so should be good, and look good being black! next firmware sounds brilliant, wonder when it will come? would be amazing if they overclocked the processor. i heard people talking about another nokia phone with the same processor clocked at 600mhz? and im wondering, since im new to the n97 (althought i have an n95 8gb atm) im wondering what cool and usefull apps you would reccomend i download? Thanks
  • Oh yes that is the 5800xm I believe, and that was updated w/ firmware. Hopefully they can do the same for the N97. What are you're thoughts on the N900, the latest article on this site covered it.
  • rothomson
apparently the 5800xm was overclocked to the same speed as the n97 and the 5630xm was overclocked to 600mhz, is that right? just something i read. and the N900? grr >< im rather annoyed about that! i just bought the n97 then read about that! its good spec wise. but i think the n97 is much nicer to look at. i wonder if they will introduce shared memory into the n97? Thanks

Slow and buggy... Let's see, I've experienced slow when I had too many applications running at once. Buggy.. maybe a few errors here and there. I had memory full message while trying to access my inbox and it wouldn't let me into it (2 times), and I have an error when I'm recording video with the light on (3 times). Those are the only ones I've gotten. Otherwise its been very stable and not slow at all. You guys do realize that even the precious iPhone isn't perfect right? Nothing is perfect. That's what warranty repair is for. That's what reinstalling the firmware on your phone is for. That's what hard resets are for. You should try them out sometime. I know they're a pain, but they're at your disposal and they work really well. Of course, you might also want to look into any software that you're installing on the phone. Try to install everything to the mass memory if you can, and if you notice the phone isn't working right after you install an application, take note of that and uninstall it. I completely understand your feelings that you pay $600 for the phone and it you expect it to work perfectly, nothing is perfect, and sadly the way things are right now, getting a phone out to market seems to trump getting it to work almost flawlessly. Look at the BB Storm and the gen 1 iPhone. At least your phone isn't blowing up like iPhones are ;-)
  • I'm pretty sure some of those bugs you have experienced may be down to some faulty firmware on your phone. I haven't had any of those bugs and such... I don't think a lot of others have either.

I don't believe the software is brilliant at the minute but the Nokia 5800's firmware is improving and they will definitely do the same with their flagship device. They can't avoid fixing some firmware issues on it.

Once the Nokia N97 has these ironed out, the device will be one worth having and if you have it at the minute, keep it. I know Nokia should have fixed these errors before releasing the device but you can't always identify them without letting a mass audience find the problems.

The Nokia N97 is a great multimedia device and I've benefited from it in controlling my blog. I think with some speed improvements and so on, I will use this device for a long time yet.

i read what u say but we are not beta testers to buy such expensive phone to test and then tell nokia that these all are the problems and do something with it as this only ends with frustration, and dissapointment. As a early buyer we always get phones at very high cost (and letter cost drop) so in such situation how we become wrong when we expect nokia to give best quality and definitely a bugless phone which nokia can't. So to all peoples don't buy this phone this is very buggy and u will definitely regret

everything you said it's true. but when you pay 700 euros for a phone you can't accept this king of bugs! for the radio bugs, there are others french users who have the same problem (inparticularly those who live in paris).

I can't wait the end of the world in order to have a good phone. Nokia's competitors are very agressive and offer good mobiles phones.
Nokia have to wake up and stop consider their users as beta-tester.
  • yeah
I agree with Kurtnell. The N97 is a joke from Nokia: a very slow and buggy phone! I have one and it's a martyrdom. This device is a shame!
I recommend to buy a other phone or wait an update wich can erase these bugs. but now: don't buy this phone.

here you can see the radio bugs:

    don't buy this phone!

The n97 is an utter piece of crap. Do not buy one. You Will regret it
  • How can you say the N97 is an utter piece of crap? Are you mad?
  • Marcelo
Not mad, just a troll. ignore.
  • Kurtnelle
No he's right, the software on the N97 is utter crap, don't buy it until Nokia makes a symbian that is designed for touch interfaces.
  • What phone do you have? It might not be a capacitive screen but I sure as hell would rather use an N97 than an iPhone for many-a-reason.
  • karr
hey carl, is the n97 OS not slow, i wanna get the n97 but ive reading alot of negetive reviews which is turning me away to the iphone..
  • Marcelo
    Amen.
Either, way, the Iphone people are mostly easily amused by bells and whistles.
  • khopesh
This was said about 5800's last update aswell fruishon on the flagship first ?
  • I really want that kinetic scrolling! Using the scroll bar is a pain when you have quite a few contacts...
  • Timi
Ditto. I hate using the scroll bar.
