Is The Nokia N97 Screen Scratch Resistant? This Stress Test Says Yes

by Mike Macias on June 24, 2009

Update: The N97 screen IS NOT scratch resistant, despite the amazing video below. Check out my latest article about N97 screen protectors by clicking here.

I have never heard for sure whether or not the Nokia N97 has a scratch resistant screen. Maybe I missed it in some press release, but it seems nobody has even raised the issue yet. I personally hate using screen protectors and cases on my devices so after seeing this video I’m thrilled that I might not be needing one. I normally keep my phone in a pocket all by itself to assure me that keys or coins to scratch it up. Amazon.com has quite a decent listing of N97 screen protectors, or you can check out this high quality

Paul from N97Geeks.com is in t he middle of a stress test on his N97 and the screen scratch test results are amazing. See the video below for yourself…

Paul has some cajones to do that to his Nokia smartphone. Personally I don’t think I can work up the courage to do that. What do you think? Will you buy a N97 screen protector or trust the results in this video? Be sure to follow N97 Geeks for more parts of their N97 stress test.

Update: My N97 over the past few weeks has got a few really tiny and annoying scratches on the screen. Like thin little slices. Just giving everyone the heads to to cover your N97!

    Dear Members ,

I got a couple of question i wish someone could answer them about my N97.

first i was wondering for people who own the white n97 , do you think the color would change overtime to brownish ?

and i just preordered the INVISIBLESHIELD for the n97 . have anyone recieved it yet and tried it ?

    thank you :)

I think it is a possibility over time..... but..... it would take a while.

The N97's screen feels very soft when you glide your finger over it, compared to the N96/N95.
Having owned an N97 for one week screen has become covered with tiny scratches from being in a pocket by itself. Now when the stylus is moved over the scratches it feels like there is git on screen. These tiny scratches refract the light from the screen causing a rainbow effect along the scratch, very annoying (greasy fingerprints do the same).
Nokia went with a touch resitance screen because they thought the iphone's screen was too sensitive (so I'm told by a Nokia Shop), I would have gladly had an over sensitive glass screen which will not scratch easily to the soft one they supplied.
I had the N95 for 18 months with one scratch; it had a glass screen; why not this one? Bad choice Nokia!
If you buy one make sure you buy a screen protector and/or a case to protect it.
    Awesome phone though, best yet.

I saw Timi's comment about it but I'd like to have more opinions. Jmkiang? :)

Hi Mike, I have a site link that has a combination of STRESS tests including WASH test!!!! see it here .. hope its informative :) http://symbian.smashpop.net/crush-that-n97

go check it.. to painful for me to see but the N97 survived it all
  • Eeep! Why? why? subject the N97 to that lol :P. Those N97Geeks have gone too far! :P j/k I know now not to drop my unit on concrete.
  • Personally I dont think that the screen will get major scratches, but over time it will start to show minor spider? scratches. Thats what I worry about. Its the fine scratches that you can see in sunlight that worry me. Personally I invested 10 bucks into a Clarivue. Its a wonderful protector thats clear and easy to put on.
  • Have you noticed if the clarivue screen protector has hindered the touch sensitivity on your n97?
  • Its actually great. I don't notice any difference with the stock protector and the new one. I posted some photos of the protector if you are interested. You can see that it has cutouts for the sensor areas.
