I was able to create my own icon and get fullscreen with my N97 by doing this:

0)Created my own PNG icon
1) Downloaded gmail from the internet (google's will install directly – can't seem to save it on my PC)
2) Extracted the download
3) Modified the MANIFEST.MF file and INCLUDED (copy) matejoh's settings at the bottom of the file
4) Replaced GmailIcon.png with my own icon
5) Zipped everything back together
6) Renamed the zipped file extention to .jar
7) Install on my N97.
Shut down Gmail if you launched it after install
9) Go to Settings->Application Mgr.->Installed apps.
10) Select Gmail
11) Click on “Options” softkey
12) Select “Suite Settings”
13) Select “Off” for the “On-Screen Keyboard”
14) TADA!!!!

i cant find any setting for how often it checks for new mail? and it doesnt know whern i receive a new mail. any ideas?

Am in desperate need of help after spending hours on the internet trying to come up with a solution on my own.

The Gmail app just doesn't want to work on my n97 mini. I download it from the Google site, and it tends to freeze after downloading about 200kb. After freezing for three or four minutes, the 'downloading' pop up disappears, and it just goes back to the Gmail download webpage. I tried that a few dozen times, and it eventually managed to download the entire file.

however, it doesn't install itself. So I found the file using explorer (after hooking up my phone to my PC), and when I ran it, the phone asked me if I wanted to install it (yes), that the software wasn't trusted (install anyway), and then, it - argh! - freezes about two-thirds of the way into installation. After a minute or to there's a polite beep with the message 'unable to install.'

I really need this app, since all other Nokia messaging systems completely suck, and the Gmail over the web is crappy on the mobile as well...

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hmm, I wonder why there is no option to always allow? Seems a bit silly to me. It's my phone. I trust the app. I want to allow it permenantly. Prompts are REALLY annoying. Very frustrating. Same problem with the Facebook app — you even get TWO prompts (one for network access as well as user data). Soooooo annoying. Any hacks or ideas anyone to get around this problem?
