In Depth Review Of Gmail Application: Email On The Go!

Most people using Gmail have set Nokia Messaging to access their account since the built in email software is just plain horrible:  not only is it slow &  doesn’t always update on time, it has no html support and no kinetic scrolling- or scrolling whatsoever while the UI is just ….primitive.  It just isn’t reliable on a day-to-day basis.

The Nokia Messaging software is a step forward, its good but not “wow!”. I’m sure we all have been subject to Nokia Messaging’s shortages, where our emails were just not pushed through anymore, for as long as several days at a time. NM has promised to fixes all these bugs and add kinetic scrolling in their next update.

All of the above was to simply introduce the new Gmail application. Its a java application, which explains why it has a very pixelated icon

Seeing as I’m in a good mood, I did some research and found the same application with a modified (read bigger and better) icon.

You can see here the difference:

The software itself will start up in, what I call, “Nokia Java Compatibility Mode”, which means that navigation keys will be added in on the screen, resulting in less screen space for the program itself.  This mode is supposedly helpful for most applications that only input keyboard strokes and not screen strokes. Let’s also not forget that Nokia 5800 users do not have a physical keyboard, hence greatly limiting their input options.

I will soon soon make a post on how to disable this “Nokia Java Compatibility Mode”, till then I’ll give you a quick rundown:

-install the icon-modified version.

- go to “Settings”, then “Application mgr, then “Installed apps”.

-find the program called “Gmail”.

24

-Click on “options” then on “Suite settings”.

31

-Now you can customise the settings as you like or just mimic mine
(make sure the “On-screen keyboard” field has the value “No”).

42

That’s how to get your new Gmail application full screen will look like:

51

This is the “Compose section”:

6As you can see, all of the screen is used. It has a clean, simple interface.

7

You have the option of adding CCs and BCCs if needed. You can also save your draft for futur sending.

Options from the main screen:

9

You can access your “Outbox”, “Drafts”(the ones made on the phone) and your Gmail Contacts!

8

Most of GMail’s basic features are available, “Mark as Read”, “Add star”, “Report Spam”

111

Useful feature: You can manage more than 1 Gmail account

Contact layout example:

10

All the details found on the desktop version will be available here too.

Search menu:

14

This is the result of a search with the keyword “Twitter”, as seen on the title bar….

Settings menu:

121

A little tweaking never hurts….

13

This is what it looks like with a large font

Pros:

  • Clean, easy to use, fullscreen interface
  • Ability to manage more than 1 Gmail account
  • Contacts, filters and groups are available to use

Cons:

  • No notification of new emails
  • No homescreen widgets
  • No filters

Conclusion: Great alternative to the bundled apllications, if Google can find a way to implement a homescreen widget and add notifications, they will have a winner. Maybe they could add themes, like in Opera mini?

I can see it in full screen mode, but when I tap on any field (from, to, message...) the app shows me the native composition screen (ie., the black one, like when writing SMS's). I own a N97, BTW. Any ideas? (I tried to modify the MANIFEST file contained in the .jar archive, with no luck)

HOW DO I ADD ATTACHMENTS IN MY EMAIL THROUGH THIS APPLICATION.

This looks great. I can't wait to install to my N97. Might replace Nokia Messenging. I like the interface a lot. Very clean.
  • Fer
    Full screen doesnt work.
  • You sure you have set "Off" for "On-screen keyboard" and not "Navig. Keys only" ?
  • Johan
Have the same issue as Fer: fullscreen isn't working. Running 12.0.26 on the phone and Gmail 2.00(6).

Any suggestions? It looses some of the cool-factor with the standard header and footer still visible... :-/
  • It looks like the shown theme is SE7EN Black by NCA...I use the same one, it's very nice.

Good to know there is some kind of notification...I'll be trying it out today.

    Thanks,

  • Good eye! That's exactly the theme :)
We're starting a new segment new week called "Tuesday Themes" and Se7en will mentioned. Stay tuned!
  • Yes, that's a great looking theme. I have it on my N97 right now. Thanks for the link! http://nca.touchnokia.ru/

This App does have notification whenever I leave the application open and running in the background and I get an e-mail the phone vibrates. As far as a visual notification there isn't one.
  • Entirely true, I did forgot to mention that! Thanks!

Does anyone have a way of avoiding the "Allow application to use network" prompt when the Gmail app starts?
  • Unfortunately, you can only chose "Ask first time only" and not "Always allowed". If you hide the application when quitting instead of exiting, it will run the background and not ask you for the use of your network.
  • Jaichauch
Hmm, I wonder why there is no option to always allow? Seems a bit silly to me. It's my phone. I trust the app. I want to allow it permenantly. Prompts are REALLY annoying. Very frustrating. Same problem with the Facebook app -- you even get TWO prompts (one for network access as well as user data). Soooooo annoying. Any hacks or ideas anyone to get around this problem?

How did you make the Gmail App fullscreen? By following you tute I could disable the Java Keyboard, but the standard header and footer buttons are still viewable. Also, what theme are you using, it just looks so neat and tidy? Thanks!!
  • Make sure you chose "Off" for "On-screen keyboard" and not "Navig. Keys only". That should sort it out for you.
  • Hi,

If you use the version from Google.com you can have fullscreen.
  • Stephen
Agreed, just installed the version from Google and it obviously is a newer version to the above mentioned "Modified Icon" version. Allows fullscreen, but has a dodgey icon. I'll take the better functionality over the better icon for now.

full screen doesn't work for me, the screen is even smaller than the "ugly icon" version from google. I have side buttons and a phone info bar at the top (not there in the official version). I hope there's a fix.

Google really needs to upgrade there mobile apps, gmail does work but looks horrible and gmaps crashes just a second after you get hope it will work. To bad because i loved those apps on my n95.
