How To Sync Your N97 With Google Contacts & Calendar

I’m a huge fan Google services such as Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, & Tasks. In this article I’ll show you how to synchronize your Nokia N97 with Google Contacts & Calendar. There are a few different ways to do this. The method I’ll show you in this article is the official way as instructed by Google. This sync method is completely free.

First off, let’s get a rundown of the features as described by Google.

Synchronize your contacts. Get your Google contacts quickly and easily to your phone. With Sync, you can have access to your address book at anytime and place that you need it.

Get calendar alerts. Using your phone’s native calendar, you can now access your Google calendar, and be alerted for upcoming appointments with sound or vibration.

Always in sync. Your contacts stay synchronized whether you access them from your phone or from your computer. Add or edit contact information right on your device or on your Google account on the web.

How To Setup Google Sync

1. BACKUP YOUR DATA (contacts & calendar) on both your phone and Google account. To backup your phone use the Nokia PC Suite software.

2. Download Mail For Exchange software.

3. Follow the instructions found on this page.

    I just tried following these instructions and MfE failed to install altogether. Curiously there was a folder in there marked MfE before installing, but no option to run anywhere. It was a pain to find on Nokia's web site.

    Goosync is mentioned above, and does have great features.

    Be careful on their support though. It was great during eval, but a few of us have experienced very slow support since actually paying for the Premium Service.

    In partly self induced situation, my calendar has been dead now for more than a week and no response from Goosync.

    I really hope they improve this, the service is very good and does what is needed for my key areas, including a workable multi calendar solution. But be warned - support can be slow to non existant after you sign up!

    i've just bought a new N97, but soon after that i found there are some problems on my device and hopefully can get any tips n tricks from you all.
    1. why does the battery so easily run-off power, it's just could endure around 12-18hrs
    2. why the internal phone memory (c: storage drive) so easily full and sometimes 'hang' because of it.
    is the c drive's memory 128 MB only? how can i allocate some free space memories from D; mass storage
    drive, still got about 29.8 GB free space).

    I looked on the supplied link for the Mail exchange software, but as previously mentioned the n97 is not listed.
    i looked in all of the folders on the actual n97 and there not in there either!
    Do you have any ideas as to what i could do? i like the fact that i can update my contacts from my PC.

    Hi Dave

    I had the same problem but (having read a thread on a different site) downloaded the MfE software for the 5800, being another phone using the same software version. Once downloaded, it works pretty well if you follow the instructions above.

  • You can also download the software by looking for "Nokia 5800" instead of "Mokia N97"

    Not sure why they haven't updated it, but hte MFE site has always been slow to add new devices :(
    The Mail For Exchange installer should be in the C: drive of the N97 under the installs or installation folder, unless you have done a reset/format, in which case it may have been deleted.
  • I started down this road with my N95, but anything that involves software pretending to act like Microsoft software makes me wary ... and the Nokia dire warning about never ever trying to sync in any other way whatsoever at the risk of corrupting everything for some reason wasn't enough to put me off ... and then it didn't work!

    The first failure was enough to abort it for me, so I bought googasync (www.googesync.org) which works a treat with the latest N97 firmware.

    Personally I use Goosync which I'm going to write about this weekend. It's a
    great alternative to this method and well worth the money.
