Gravity Brings Twitter To The Nokia N97

by Mike Macias on July 21, 2009

The hugely popular social networking site is gaining membership by the millions and it’s becoming more crucial to be able to keep up with friends and colleagues while you’re on the go. Heck, you can even find @n97fanatics on Twitter, ready to answer questions about the Nokia N97 (follow me if you want :) . A few months back I started using Twitter on a daily basis and realized I didn’t want to be chained my computer to stay updated.  I started looking for a twitter application for my E71 (main phone at the time).

That’s when a certain application caught my attention…

Gravity is a twitter application for the Nokia N97 and all Nokia smartphones that does a better job than many PC applications I’ve used – including Tweetdeck. That’s quite a bold statement but Gravity shows the power that Symbian S60 devices can have.

Overview of Gravity’s Features:

  • Compatible with Twitter and Laconica
  • All functions available on your S60 phone: tweet, reply, DM, follow & unfollow, create favourites, search, auto-update and many more …
  • Tabbed view of your Timeline, Replies, Messages, Friends, …
  • Configurable Audio Alerts for Timeline/Replies/DM’s & Searches
  • Setup and use as many accounts as you want at the same time
  • Group support for creating custom tabs with user-defined filters
  • Twitter-Search section with multiple search tabs and Twitter Trends
  • Post pictures to MobyPicture, TwitPic, TwitGoo & Posterous
  • Preview pictures from MobyPicture, TwitPic or TwitGoo
  • Open URLs from any Tweet
  • Kinetic scrolling on S60v5 ( Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 )
  • Theme support
  • Full-Screen mode
  • Built-in auto-update function and beta access for testing the latest features

As you can see this application has everything you need. The developer is constantly updating Gravity and it now includes options for notification sounds and vibrations to let you know when someone tweets, replies, etc. And it’s very customizable.

Once you install the application be sure to upgrade to the latest alpha version. This will give you the option to add a Gravity widget to your homescreen. Right now it only shows recent tweets from your friends, but I’m in the future it adds the option to view the number of new replies and messages.

Gravity comes with a free 10 day trial which gives you full access to the application. After 10 days you can purchase if if you like it for $10. I think it’s really a great value, but don’t take my word for it.

In a future post I’ll show you a few free Twitter applications for the N97, but none of them match the usability of Gravity.

Do you tweet from your Nokia N97?

I really struggle to see how the N97 is a good phone and i have been buying Nokia since they were launched.
There is no customer relationship to be had or stores anymore and the software really doesnt work with a mac.

I can wait to get a new phone.
  • How did I miss this? Hahaha...guess my Gravity article will be put on hold for a little bit (there are still tons of new features to discuss however).

    Go @janole and Gravity!

  • @Mike, You may also try the free @SociallyApp (http://bit.ly/6mFra0) on N97. It supports Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and integrates with the phone book by showing the profile photos and latest status of the callers during incoming calls. Very nice app! However, in nokia n97, there is no way to copy and paste!! Anyone know how to get around that?
  • You can highlight text and copy it in portrait mode then paste it.

Thank you for answering, Mike! But how do you do that? I see no option button? Where do you find the copy/paste button in portrait mode in Gravity in the N97?
  • tileeba
I just saw where!! If you have the n97 in portrait mode AND the keyboard CLOSED, then there are three lines that you click on that give you the copy/paste comand! Is that what you were talking about?! (Or is there even another way?) That will work, though. Thanks again for answering!
  • That is what im talking about. I wish there was an easier way but thats it for now. Maybe the new firmware will address the issue.

Nice app, but complicated to set up. Not easy to figure out for the first time, now that its set up its a nice app. 4 out of 5

Looked like a nice app until i installed it. Took several minutes to varify my details, and then told me i wasnt following anyone nor were there any new tweets. I thought perhaps i had the wrong password so i choose another one and it still signed me in as the same person! Now i just get an continual Network Error 33! I also couldn't find an alpha upgrade option. 0 out 5 rating on this app from me.
  • Hmmm. No clue why that is happening. Maybe you went over your Tweet limits for that hour with another app/program. That's when I usually get the Network Error 33. Maybe try another hour?
