Email On The N97 Part 1: Nokia Messaging

by Mike Macias on June 27, 2009

This is the first part of my Email On The Nokia N97 series that I’ll be writing. Today I will show you my personal favorite which is Nokia’s latest email solution called Nokia Messaging. This sadly did not come pre-installed on the N97 so it will take some setting up. Nokia Messaging connects to most email services such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. and excludes corporate email like Microsoft Exchange. To set that up use the Mail for Exchange application already installed on your N97. I’ll leave that conversation for another day. For now, let’s take a look at Nokia Messaging on the N97.

Basic Features Include:

Nokia Messaging makes mobile email easy and mobilizes consumer email across a range of Nokia S60 devices. Nokia Messaging enables users to quickly set up, access, and use their email on their Nokia devices through a service that is optimized for mobile email.
What’s new in this release of Nokia Messaging?

- Support for Windows Live Hotmail email addresses
- Advanced email server settings configuration on http://email.nokia.com
- Support for 18 Symbian S60 devices in 17 languages
- Advanced functions such as flagging (works to star Gmail messages), forwarding, attachements, real time push email, sync with sent folders and up to 5 imap folders.
- Connect to up to 10 email accounts at a time.
- Schedule sync times and intervals.
- Option to disable “sync while roaming”.
- Very fast user interface. All messages are downloaded as they come automatically.

How To Set Up Nokia Messaging On The N97

To sign up for Nokia Messaging, you need:

* An existing Internet email account
* A data service plan with your operator
* A supported Nokia phone
* Nokia Messaging software installed on your Nokia phone

Click here to sign up. To ensure reliable delivery of the Installation SMS, Nokia Messaging sends two text messages. You can use either text message to download and install Nokia Messaging.

Those are the basics. I made a few screenshots so you can get an idea of how the UI looks.

Right now Nokia Messaging is free. No telling if they will ever charge or not.

I've been using Nokia messaging and I like it very much. But I have a great problem, and it's that the C: memory becomes full very soon and I must uninstall the program. I move away of the C: memory as much apps that I can, but I couldn't solve the problem. Can you help me with these?

That is obvioulsy an answer too quick fo a such major issue.

Amazing you have 32GB in E:/ and you cannot have Nokia Messaging to store messages there. Today I have 5MB left in my C:/ drive and that prevents me some software updates. I need absolutely to move these messages to E:/

Hi, I've bought an N97 on the strength that it was an email phone. I'm not tech savvy but that didn't ought to be neccessary.
I have email "outlook" via Virgin.net which I can see on my PC and on their web-mail. Setting up the phone to use my virgin email address stopped mail from either going to my pc or to the web-mail. I have managed to sort that but I have a remaining problem. A new email is preceded by a "tone" on the phone. If I go to the email app on the phone (I think it's NM) then I can read it. Then when I exit the app the mail disappears. Ideally I could respond to it (say) 5 minutes later via the phone but it's either immediately or never. Even mail sent from the phone seems to disappear. Any ideas? It's probably a setting.
Oh and while typing this, virgin mail has just sent me 1700 mail messages from the internet account to the PC. They are old ones which were received within the last 30 days.
    HELP!

All I want to do is to open my email the same way I use to open in my iPhone... Do you know if this is possible using N97? I intend to buy one but I'm really confused about this. I tried to configure this in a Nokia 5800 and it was not satisfactory. Do you know if Messaging for N97 is better?

    Thanks !

I have downloaded gmail on the nokia messenger thing which works fine but I cant seem to get it on the widget? Would you be able to guide me through how to link my gmail on the email widget?
  • To use the email widget with Nokia Messaging you must NOT have another account setup in the default messaging application. If you only have that Gmail account setup then that "Email Widget" should work just fine.

Hi I got fed up with Messanger and installed bluewhale for my email, it works great. Emails received as they are sent but no widget for home screen. The phone vibrates and you get a tone and the email auto pops up on the front screen. It is free and works - not the best lay out but working with no faults.

    Hey Mike,

Just wondering if you could please shed some light! I recently bought a nokia n97 and when i set up my email - it automatically installed the nokia messaging service. Im not entirely sure what this is as i received an email from nokia talking about some kind of trial process and that i would have to pay a subscription after the trial period ended?! First of all - when does thistrial period end and what happens after it does? what would we have to use in replacement? Why would we need to pay a subscription charge if we're already paying a line rental to use the internet on our phones? It doesnt make any sense to me....! Please help!

    Thanks

Hi, in the weekend I upgraded my N97 to the new firmware 12, and also reinstalled the latest version of Nokia Messaging with html support.

Html support is great, however my new problem is that it does not automatically get new emails (it is configured for gmail over imap) like it used to. I have to manually choose send/receive.

I am pretty sure I have all the settings right.Sync is enabled in the inbox, application startup is on automatic, hours is set to on all day, send and recieve is set to soonest, just like how it was last week when it worked.

Not sure if the problem is related to the firmware or the new messaging. Probably the messaging. Any ideas?

hello mike, i hv a problem with my mail for exchange setup that has been nagging me for weeks now

i installed my mail for exchange account just fine the first time, and it works fine. but then my n97 hanged/locked up, so i hard reset it (no choice). everything else works fine, except i cant setup my mail for exchange account. NM gets me through until the last bit of setup when it says the setup is complete and i can start using my account, but then a blank browser popup came up, and my MFE account is nowhere to be found, even the home widget untouched, nothing happened.

i tried several times reformatting my phone memory AND mass memory and running the setup again, but still to no avail.

    please help me bro

This question has a logical answer. May be the N97 can do only "PULL MAIL" but not "PUSH MAIL" and in few days "the nokia messaging" will become payable.

hi, im using nokia email app on my n97 and i use 2 yahoo accounts + my university account on it, but to be honest im disappointed in the application cos despite the fact that its UI is well designe but its performace just sucks! im having real trouble fetching yahoo mails or any other mail with sync starts, net connection is up but its inactive and i get the new e mail like 5-6 hrs or even the next day in my n97. ;(( , dunno if their servers r down or something like it but if only this app works the way its intended too then i'd really be gratefull for nokia for this app.
any1 had this bug with this app or its just me :( ?

    HI Mike,
Personally I like nokia messaging. But i'm getting a headache when it gets to auto notification and/or auto retrieve emails. I bought the phone a few days ago in Hong Kong but I live on the mainland (china) most of the time. The download over here, is done through GPRS, there aren't many WIFI hotspots. Now, i have configured the auto retrieval at every 30 minutes, nothing happens, no retrieval no nothing. Then i tried disabling the auto retrieval and enabled the notification (set to auto update), no dice.
Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to stay connected all the time (connect to mailbox and stay connected)? I have set the priority for the gprs network to 1 and my home wifi network to 2. Selected the correct mailbox (hotmail) but it ain't updating. Why is that?

Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and getting me emails manually don't cause any problems. Just click on the widget, asks me to get connected, push yes and here it goes, no problem. I just can't get the phone to do it automatically .... which is really annoying.

Any help would be really appreciated

Does anyone have the same problem as me on their n97, I have set my email up perfectly, but when I get a new one it doesnt notify me. I have to click on the inbox, connect to it and then I find that Ive missed a hell load of messages. Then when i press exit im not connected anymore. I dont see the point in having the space on my home screen for a little widget and an update of emails when it doesnt update itself. could someone help? Vodafone has been no help whatsoever! fones4uandme@rocketmail.com
  • I dont think you are using nokia messaging, like in this article.

I have been able to set up my hotmail account on the n97 but can't seem to work my work email account on this - how do I set this up? I am entering the POP3 ref and username and password etc but its not happening - I have Windows Mail (vista). The set up on my Blackberyy was simple but I was told to switch over to n97 but I am having a nightmare. Would like your help please.

my email keeps crashing my nokia n97

i want it to auto receive (push email) and am using my work email

however, it has over 7000 emails and the phone keeps trying to download them all. as a result, i cannot even use the phone for ANYTHING as it slows up to a point you cannot use it.

i am just using the normal software that came on the phone. i want auto email like i get on my bberry or htc touch pro2. is it possible? is there ANYWAY to stop it trying to download all my emails? it never used to do it on the n95
  • Have you tried installing nokia messaging yet, as shown in this article? The built in client is for light email users.
  • Jan
I can't send any email out from my Gmail inbox. A little investigation revealed that gmail IMAP need startTLS for the security setting.
From the nokia messaging website, it only support SSL.
Anyone has this problem? If it does work for you, can you share the inbox server setting from the nokia messaging website that you have?
  • Jan, did you turn on IMAP under your Gmail settings? You shouldn't have to set up anything, no server settings - Nothing. Gmail and Nokia Messaging works out of the box.
  • Jan
    Ok, finally solved it....
I compared the setting with the one my friend has.
The port for outgoing should be 465 and SSL checked. Somehow, mine is 587 with SSL unchecked.
  • Sweet. No clue why it didn't properly set you up the first time, but glad you got it working. I've been testing out emoze.com for my email and it's working decent.
  • Jan
Yes I did...I'm staring at it right now actually :P
It says "IMAP is enabled" in my gmail setting.
I know that it should work out of the box, I even compared the manual setting that google provides to setup imap on the symbian mobile with the default setting that nokia has on my nokia messaging account website.
    The only difference is this:
Google wants me to set startTSL as the authentication method.
Nokia messaging has the port correct (587) but the SSL checkbox unchecked. When I try to check it and click save, Nokia throw an error message saying it cannot connect to the mail server.
  • Also one more thing... if you use profimail, its emails dont populate in the homescreen widgets. I mean you cannot see latest email on homescreen. ... very sad.
  • Yes Sameer, this is what I'm waiting for. I'm going to try and contact the
developer to see if we can get this implemented. Maybe they are already
    working on it.
  • Wow.. this profimail is fantistic. I just installed it on my Nokia N97. IT has most of the features or i would say all. Two things i couldn't find. Download limit for number of emails and the push connection frequency ? Anyone knows? I have 4000 emails in the gmail inbox. I dont want them all to be downloaded. Another improvements could be a good skin. It currently just add colors to the base UI. It looks like a DOS age email. There are no gradations and good skins. The price is also a bit costly for us in India. EUR10.
But i would say.. its a great email.
  • Alfonso
    * experience, sorry :(
  • Alfonso
    Ok here's my esperience.
    good features:
I have two configured accounts using Nokia messaging, Gmail and Yahoo accounts and works perfect. I have a sound when I get an email, touch works fine.

    Cons:
Inspite of NM is a Nokia software it doesn't integrate with the phone, because you don't get a visual confirmation for new emails, also when you want to send an email to one of your contacts it uses default messaging app and unless yuo have configured one account on it it says "No mailbox defined"
I want to add a third email account (exchange acc.) using either Nokia messaging or default messaging and I've got this message "You cannot add any more mailboxes of this type to your account". I don't think Yahoo or Gmail uses exchange servers for their accounts.
Apart from that battery only lasts 2 days which is very bad. If you use wlan feature and couple of apps you'll be lucky if you get more than 1 day.

    Thanks
  • If you enable the Email Widget on your homescreen you get the notification. I agree though we should also get the @ notification up above next to the battery meter.

If you need an exchange account use Mail For Exchange, it should be built into the firmware.

As for the battery life - yes, these phones have a huge screen and are always connected to the internet. 2 days is actually really good for what these phones do. Just charge it every night and you'll be set.
  • Istyrl
well I have to admit, I have both iphone and n95 and the mail system is great on iphone...lets wait for new apps that will surely come in the near future.

btw, Jeran, you confirm I wont get yahoo mail because i dont have the subscribed one? That sucks, it is so great to have exchange yahoo gmail on my iphone (and even more ...)...:(
  • jeran
sry, I have no experience with Yahoo - the only thing I can recommend, is to forward all mails from Yahoo to gmail so you have everything in one central place and you don't loose your yahoo mail adress.

Gmail can also send mails in a way, that the recipient sees your yahoo address as sender. Additionally you can add labels to each yahoo message, so you know from where the mail is coming from...

In general, if you can access your mails from yahoo with your iphone, the same should be possible with your nokia phone. probably you have to play around with the server settings a bit...
  • Istyrl
    Hi there
Just a stupid question to the new nokia user I am. I am using exchange mail and gmail built in on my n97 and it works fine. Tried with Yahoo but I guess unless i switch to pay mail (yahoo plus) I wont be able to get mails unless through web.
My question is : what is wrong with that? I mean exchange mail plus gmail works great, why bother with NM?
  • jeran
well, people find the built-in one not sexy enough - and slow. They always compare it with the mail experience on blackberrys and iphone. Which is way better than Nokia's mail experience.

Nokia therefore tried to come up with something new, something more sexy. In my opinion, NM is an epic fail: It is slow. You cannot get all your mails. You have higher delays compare to using e.g. Gmails Imap Idle directly. You cannot use other mail adresses you have configured within Gmail (I have an gmail adress and another public one; normaly I send via my public one - you can configure this in gmail). Not even HTML mail is working proberly on the N97.

So I aggree: If you don't want to pay for a good mail solution, stay with the old school built in one of the Nokia N97 - it is not really "sexy", but at least it is working fine.

If you want to try a really good & fast solution with fast HTML support try Profimail from lonelycatgames. They even optimised it for touch already - so you get a better user interface on the touch phones than on the non touch phones.
  • Profimail is king N97 users ! Drop NM like a brick - It works fully on Mass Memory ! So free your RAM and use it ! linky here http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=profimail
  • jeran
and with fast, I mean really fast - if I submit a comment here, I receive the notification mail 2 to 5 seconds later on my N97 - that's performance! Opening the mail takes another 3 seconds.

Nokia Messaging does not even shows up the mailbox overview in 3 seconds.
  • JD
A couple of things i dont like about NM:
It doesn't give you a '1 new email received' message popup on the phone as with sms. If you dont hear the tone or phone is on silent then no alert.
Its not in the core of the phone software which causes probs like it can accidentally be closed. I dont want my email to be an app - i just want receiving an email to be like recieving an sms.

Mike, you mention that HTML email will become available - do you mean as a NM update or as an improvement on the inbuilt email viewer?
  • Hi Jd,

It doesn't give you that notification but you CAN have your latest emails on the homescreen, like in my screenshot. I actually like it better that way. HTML will become available as a NM update, the built in email viewer already has HTML.
  • Nokia messaging dont work properly on the N97. It dosent have HTML support and neither Touch support. If you have 2-3 email, you cant switch by touching the email dropdown. The touch dont work. You have to use the slide keypad. Also the loading circular icon shows only half and full in the landscape mode.
The worst part in landscape mode is...., of the 3.5 inch display, 60% is taken by the buttons and email headers. So you are left with mear 200pix width. There is no full screen mode. Its a pathetic ..
  • Hi,

Did you recently try the newer version or are you referring to a version you tried awhile back ago? For mine the touch DOES work, I don't have to use the slide keypad. About full screen mode, I agree they should add it. But as with any application you will get those side bars in landscapre mode. I'll make a video for you guys soon so you can see how it works on my N97.
  • adhthakari
I also deleted NM and loaded Profimail as a demo. So far much better than NM.
I have better HTML support and have more control over the emails and it seems to be real push, with good control over freq of pull. How about a review?
  • Thanks for the suggestion i'll give it a shot. Does it allow u to have ur email shown on the homescreen?
  • jeran
like mentioned above/below I'm using profimail too - but haven't found a widget for the home screen yet.

but if you get a new email, there will be an overlaid icon in the upper right corner informing you about a new mail (actually, about the number of new mails)
  • Thanks for the info. Hopefully they get a widget soon. Maybe I'll contact the developers.
  • jeran
my biggest concern: you can't sync all messages from the imap server. i like to have them with me for reference - i also use emails as notes (e.g. starred ones in gmail) - but I can't get all of them on the phone :'(
  • Yes that is a bummer but I get by that by using the Gmail app which works great on the N97 when I need to lookup older emails. It's not often, maybe once or twice a week.
  • jeran

Well, I travel a lot around europe. I use the mails to keep all the flight data and booking reservations - and that roaming kills you if you want to find some older data
  • Oh yes that is true. You're absolutely right. So have you found another solution? The next part of my email on n97 series will be about Emoze.
  • jeran
well, the cheapest and easiest way - but definitely not very sexy - is to use the old school built in mail client. that one save message and download everything.

i tried emoze long time ago, but didn't work very well...

Personally, I think the best mail solution is Profimail from lonelycatgames. Unfortunately quite expensive: 24 euro or so... But it is really, really fast and can handle a lot of messages easily (3000+ mails in inbox currently and no lag when opening the folder or during scrolling)

  • netdivaweb
nokia messaging crashed my phone several times, so I deleted the program and removed the email widget from the home screen and now all is well.
  • chris
I still cannot get it to work as Push email on either my e71 or n97. I don't mind but its easier to have push than to have to sync every so often and wait for a bunch to load.
  • Really? Are you sure the application is set up right? Mine pushes through immediately. What carrier are you on? Maybe they are blocking a port or something.
  • luke
hi i can not set up my emails on the phone can some one run me thought it? and email me on luke1spurs_@hotmail.co.uk
  • What part are you stuck on?
  • Patrick
As for my case.. I hate the sync part + I cannot control the access points.. I'd prefer a standard HTML support mail client standard for the Nokia N97 anytime.
  • Hi,

You can control the access point by going to Settings > Service Info. What part of the sync do you hate? Also, I agree HTML is needed. On Twitter the lead developer of Nokia Messaging has said HTML for N97 is coming sometime this summer. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
  • Chellie
Hi, I came across this discussion whilest looking for help to get Nokia Messaging working on my N97. I have downloaded the application to my phone, however I cant seem to get to the add email addresses page, so obviously when I go to sign in on phone it says "unable to connect with information provided" as I havnt actually signed up for it. Do you have any idea as to why it wont let me sign up, either on computer or phone? Or if there is anything I can do to fix this? If anyone can help my email is Chellie@live.com.au thanks very much.
  • Tim
I tried using Messaging on the N97 but it seems like software isnt fully touch compatible.
