Did You Know? Tips For Nokia N97

by EverythingBlaxx on September 8, 2009

I just wanted to throw some quick keyboard tips and shortcuts at you guys. Some are obvious and you might have already known but you might learn something new today.

Did you know…

…that by pressing any key on the top row of the keyboard (with the exception of Backspace) from the homescreen will bring up the Dialer?

…that by pressing the Shift key twice, this will allow you to type in CAPS LOCK but you can’t do this at the beginning of a sentence?

…that by pressing the Function key twice, this will allow you to type in SYM LOCK.

…that by holding the Sym key and pressing any vowel key or the ‘C’ or ‘N’ key, you will get accents above or below the letter? Pressing the letter key multiple times while holding the Sym key will cycle through the different accents (only vowels have multiple accents however).

…that the scroll key in the middle of the D-Pad functions like an OK/Options button?

Do you know of anymore keyboard shortcuts on the N97? Post them in the Comments below.

The minimum time to lock my phone is 1 minute, there is no option in seconds? if there's none, is there a shortcut to lock my phone without pressing the power button and locking it?
  • wcharon
OK. Thanks my friend. I will deal with it and use your recommendation...

Sorry i keep begging or asking but this phone is very different from the E71.

My battery is draining fast and i am sure it is the Internet connection (packet data). For your knowledge, i am using Nokia Messeging and Profimail (trail)for email sync but both programs i have them configured to start at 7:00AM and stop at 9:00PM. After that hour the connection is still active and i push the red buttom, close the connection but come back again. Is there a way i can see what application is having active the connection after 9:00PM?

Let me try to explain... IF you create a new appointment and you go to start date and don't know which date is next tuesday their is no calendar popup to verify which is that day number. Also in that same entry i will like to change the default alarm entry to on.
    Hope this explains better...
  • Ah, I see what you mean. What I normally do is tap the day that I want to create the appointment, so it is already in the details when I create it. That way I don't have to think what date is next Tuesday like you said. Pretty sure that you can't look up the date while you are creating a new appointment.

And as far as I know, the alarm is always set to off...I haven't seen any option to make the default on.

Do you also know how to Pop up the calendar when making an appointment ?? When i have or create an apointment and want to reschedule the alarm i have to know the date because it doesn't show a calendar popup. Any help... Remember i am comparing with my old E71 functions.
  • Not sure I quite understand, but I do know that you can change the calendar's default display. I have mine on month view so I can see which days have appointments (they are marked). If I tap on a certain day, right below the calendar it shows me a list of appointments that I have for that day.

    Does that help?

Hi there, I downloaded some ringtones from Ovi store (free ones- which text you a link where you open the link and download) as the default lot supplied on the N97mini were, well, pretty crap...thing is- once downloaded I didn't want to assign them as a ringtone straight away without hearing them (you couldn't listen to them at the Ovi store anyway!) and now I don't know where they are kept on my phone! Any help?

hi guys, anybody know how to take photo without the camera sound?? Previously I use Nokia 6500s, that one you can off the camera sound but N97 seem cant do that....
  • Kousha
    You can't;unless you hack it!
They left the sound on for a reason: to not being able to take photos where you are not suppose to (most notably, girls bodies and such).

search on web for an application called silentcamera. It works. Budapestian, Tamás

if you keep pressing a button for long enough it will actually write the SYM+button of that button so you dont have to press SYM every time you want to write a dot or just one number
  • How to copy/paste

Sometimes when you have a text selection and the COPY button does not appear (ie. Contacts app) you must press SHIFT to force the COPY/PASTE button to appear.

Also, sometimes for text to be selectable (ie. Nokia Messaging), you need to change to Select Text on the Options menu.

any 1 noe how to add a third shortcut line on the home screen. plzzz tell me how

    email - thisaL_6666@YAHOO.COM

To the person asking about changing shortcuts in the shortcut widget bars, if you click and hold an app shortcut then you'll get a context menu. Click 'settings' and it'll bring up a screen allowing you to assign items (apps or shortcuts) in place of the default ones.

I'd love to know how to create a new shortcut widget bar, though.

Hard reset the N97 when it can't be powered up:

press and hold Shift + Space + Backspace and push the power button. Holt the three buttuns until the phone has booted.

Saved my live after my last firmware update when the N97's screen just went white aind turned off again. And again. And again.

    - Long press menu button to view running apps, short press menu button again to select one, long press menu button again to switch to selected app. All multitasking done with only 1 button!
    - Same thing with power button: Short press power button to open Mode list. Short press power button again to select desired mode. Long press power button to switch to selected mode.
    - when viewing lists like files list, songs list, notes list, etc, you can select multiple items by holding Shift key and scrolling with dpad. Release Shift key and press it again to deselect.

When somebody is calling you you can answer the phone without unlocking it. There is a line box named "answer". click it from left to the right and u can answer it.

Thx for the tip - you have no idea how much trouble I have answering my phone because it's locked. Is there a way you can stop the phone from locking itself automatically? And would you also know why the phone tries to connect to the internet when I try to answer a call when the phone is locked??
  • shihabi
    here is a cool one
if u want to remove an app go to menu -> applications -> options -> organise -> then select the desired app choose options -> delete or just press the backspace if u are using the keyboard
  • Rolo
a few more: when you hold down menu button to get open apps, you can also close them by clicking and holding on the app icon to get 'open/exit'. When you are entering text in T9 mode, pressing zero 3 times will give a new line (a tip carried over from the old n95 ;) )
  • richardhula
Yes if you select & long press on the open apps display you get Open dialogue but only some give you Exit option as well. i.e Opera mini 5, Menu & Home (for obvious reasons) give Open option only.
  • sar
By default there are only two shotcut bar available. There is any way to create more desktop shortcur bars to add more application icons in that.
    Thanks
  • baziljacobs
if you want to check your firmware on the phone you can type *#0000# and check for updates directly there
  • arpkan
thanks all for sharing. one i got is

when you hold down the menu button to get the open apps, you can close them one by one by pushing backspace button. this will complete multitask function use :)
  • PC
also when u click on the show open apps button, it will show the list of the open apps. and if u touch on any of the open apps u have the option to close any of the open apps.

Long Hold green call key initializes the Voice command program

Long hold Red end call key closes call connections

    Thx for the tips!
  • elGumso
Pushing and holding 0 (number zero) on the keyboard will bring up the web browser!

Thanks MD 7 for that awesome tip! I knew about switching between apps like that but had no idea there was a context menu on that screen!! How useful is that for killing apps!! Brilliant!

    el.G
  • Thanks el.G, but your web browser tip surprised me! That takes care of one more shortcut spot I can eliminate (and populate with something a bit more useful).

    Thanks again, el.G

    MD 7,

Is it possible to reassign these shortcuts? If so, how?? Like you said, something more useful would be a treat!

    el.G
  • If you are referring to the keyboard shortcuts, such as the one you mentioned, then no, I do not believe it is possible to re-assign those.

I was referring to the place in which I kept the web app so I could get to it easily (I had it in the main menu so I could get it in two clicks). But with your suggestion of long pressing the '0' (read: zero) key on the keyboard, I can now remove the web app from the main menu and put another app in its stead.

I rather like the idea of long pressing the '0' key for the web browser...makes sense considering that when I browse, I almost always have to use the keyboard anyway. Now I just open the keyboard before I start my browsing adventures (and access the web app in one button to boot).

Hope this helps, el.G...Let me know if I'm not making sense or if I've gotten your quesiton completely wrong.

  • My little contribution to the thread:

-clicking and holding down the right shortcut key on the homepage will initialise the Voice command program, meaning you open applications and call contacts just by saying it's/there name. i might do a post on this soon since it's a fairly under-hyped feature to be honest.

-turning the phone over will snooze an alarm or silence a call. Handy in the morning! (i remember needing an app for this on my N96)

-to send a message, you can just press the green button once the recipient has been chosen.

    - when writing, if you press Shift then Sym, it will gives you the possibility of changing the "Writing language"

I'll add some more as soon as I remember them!

SHIFT + DOWN/UP arrow on D-pad to mark/unmark continuous entries
SHIFT + CENTER button on D-pad to mark/unmark specific non-continous entries
SHIFT + TOUCH ENTRY ON SCREEN to mark/unmark a range of entries
  • Moedot7
    Moedot7.

On the home screen, swiping your finger across the screen will hide you active standby, doing the same again will show it.

Also, by tapping ur finger in the top right hand side of the screen, near the "battery bar" "alarm" etc, you will get a shortcut to all that stuff, like connectivity if its running alarm and so on.

holding shift and scrolling down does multiple select.

on the home menu, u can change the right shortcut key. Options (left shortcut) > Edit Content > Options > Right Selection Key
  • Great post Blaxx! And Moedot, thanks for the multiple select tip. I didn't realize that one.

Also - press shift + Return to mark an item.

In most areas the Return key works just like the Center-Dpad key.
  • One of my favorites is (from the homescreen) holding the 'Menu' key. After a second or two it pops up with a list of all of your running applicatioins. From there you can easily tap one to switch to it or you can tap and hold down one of the running apps, which brings up an option to exit said running app...very convenient when running multiple apps and wanting to close a few of them down without accessing each app individually. Any other way I can fit in the word 'app' again? Haha...well, there you have it, my favorite shortcut.

There's also pressing the camera key along the side of N97 (while the lens cover is closed) to access the secondary 'face' camera.

  • By the way, I realize that these are not keyboard shortcuts specifically, but very useful nonetheless.

what is the function key?And what does SYM LOCK?
    Greetings from the netherlands
  • davotron
By Pressing SHIFT and then SYM key you can quickly choose your input language. I guess thats of no big relevance to anyone, since no one uses T9 on a N97, but just in case...
  • The function key is the Blue arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the keyboard. When SYM LOCK is on, when you press a key, you will get the blue symbol instead of the letter without having to hold the Function key down or pressing it before each keystroke.
