Can We Expect Another N97 Firmware Update By The End Of The Year?

by Mike Macias on December 15, 2009

I’ve gotten a ton of emails from you the readers asking if Nokia will provide another firmware update for the N97 by the end of 2010. There are a few bugs that need to be worked out in v20 and of course there is always room for improvement. I know for a fact that another firmware update is in the works and a few sources told me it will add a few new features, stabality, and bug fixes. I searched around for anything “official” and there is not much to be found. Although I did find this post by a Nokia employee at their forums:

Dear updaters

We have created new support content to help you have the smoothest update experience, and to help you get the most out of your device. See the Nokia N97 support pages for more details.

Software roadmap
I can now confirm that the next release for the Nokia N97 is planned for mid-late December 2009. At this stage I cannot tell you exactly when it will be available, what it will contain, or which variants and operators will approve it.

Hey guys. With the now fourth major problem with the N97, I contacted Vodafone (Australia) who is going to cancel my contract, so I can choose a new phone. I have to send back the N97 - which is fine with me.
The latest problem was the camera not auto-focusing. My friend has a N97, and I compared. It wasn't doing it the same.
I am going the iPhone... I'm going to miss having a keyboard!! Don't get pissed off at me - look at the phones available on Vodafone Australia. I honestly think the N97 could have competed with the iPhone, but honestly, it was slow and not well thought out. If you use the flash in darker areas, you get white in the picture. Why even have a flash?!
I wish you all the best of luck with your N97's! I will watch closesly on how the updates go for it.
    Cheers

Got information from finnish repairer. New FW should be available in two weeks. Fixes hangs and memory problems. He said that apparently no new features coming.

What happened to Skype on N97 and all the other promised features?

    >> hat happened to Skype on N97 and all the other promised features? <<

Ha ha ha ha (or in spanish: ja ja ja ja).

hey nokia!! 5800 gets his v40...where is our update for the n97??
    PPLLEAAASSEE!!

Sh*t, we haven't finished killing iPhone (and Motorola Droid, and etc, etc), now popped up another troll, Nexus One. When will the killing spree by N97 end?
  • So damn! Looks like no firmware by the end of the year!
  • munster
    @ Mike

I'm guessing the next firmware will be released by the end of the week.

If you look at the v2.0. The firmware was dated October 13th but was not available until the 28th about a 2 week turn around. If my theory is right, we should see a new firmware by the end of the week, just in time for CES?

Just some wishful thinking... Happy New Year N97 Fanatics!
  • rodrigo
So Nokia has this "2-weeks delay from hype" policy? Cool firm.
  • Bummer, but I'm just happy to know that another one is on its way. Far as
I'm concerned, they can take their time and get it right. Hopefully it
    comes soon though!

  • In my experience, I didn't find too many bugs with v20 so hopefully this is just a stabilization and maximization release.
  • MrNutt
there's a new update in software update that reorganizes the system memory over to the bigger drive, that said since doing it the bloody phone is still hanging, this time its now freezing whilst answering a call, very very annoying!
  • I get no hanging or freezing on my N97. Sounds like you need to start fresh and do a hard reset maybe?
  • Yeah I agree with what was said of the "music back" problem. This is not so much a firmware update then it is an app but, I could really use the conversation app for the n97. Its only for the 3rd edition. The inbox and sent thing is a hassle just to see what you spoke about with a contact. Get that going NOkia....pleeease.
  • Jaydee
What u need is Free i-sms.. Look it up at www.dailymobile.se
U'll need to sign it tho'.. There's more interesting app over there some signed, some unsigned.. Go figure.. c",)
  • munster
Memory reorganizer update is available via software updater. Download the file and run the program in the Application folder. enjoy
  • Svein2009
@munster. What application are you referring to? When I run software uptdater I'm told that I have the latest firmware. Cannot find anything called memory reorganizwer.
  • munster
@svein2009 go to applications on your phone and find SW updater. It should automatically refresh and show you the update.

I assume you were using the software updater via your computer before? Thats the wrong one.
  • Raphi
Yea, seems, that the program-shutdowns are fixed by this at least. But i'm still testing...

:( i had the browser closing down again in this moment... :-/

    Hey guys!

Anybody had problems with losing the mass storage?
    http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=182174

I'm with that right now, and I couldn't find the way to fix it. I saw in the nokia forums other people with the same issue, but they fixed it sending the phone to support. I really not want to wait for 3 months without the phone.

It would be great if the new fw version could fix it. Did you heard something about it?
  • gaspirez
None of you had problems with this?

Does the memory reorganizer tool fix it?

    Thanks, Gaston.-
  • mike
Maybe I won't have to listen to the damn Nokia tune for incoming calls anymore. Nothing I do fixes it.
  • Daniel
I'm sure it will get pushed to January 2010. Something will happen to postpone it...
  • Kaspal
one thing that bugs me with this phone (with every FW that i've tried... i started with V11) is the fact that, if you unplug the hands free set, and plug it back in, it will let you listen to the music and all that, but whenever you intend to make a call or receive one, you HAVE to actually use the phone's speaker and mic to do it, because for some reason, the phone recognizes the hands free set as auriculars only... and wont even let you hear the call.

at 1st i thought it was a problem with the original hands free set i got with the phone, but 2 weeks ago i got the ones that comes with N97 Mini, and the same thing happens.

only workaround for that bug right now (At least, that i know of) is to restart the phone with the hands free set plugged in.

how annoying is that?... why would you want your hands free for music only?... why cant you unplug them and plug them back in and get them workin as they should?
  • Alex
    Same here in Germany!

  • I upgraded to v20, payed nearly 40Euro for it and im starting to get annoyed by this phone. The 'Call-Bug' is still there. If you swipe the green bar to unlock an answer a phone call, sometimes the phone crashes. I need a telephone to work at least in that perspective. Thats not acceptable! Appart from that there are still browser crashes and programm shutdowns, so there is enough to work on...

Allready seeing an N900 on the horizon...

    Greetz, Raphi
  • Danny
Mine also freezes - about once a day, when I swipe the green bar to unlock and answer a call. The call is answered, but I cant hang up, and the screen is frozen. Sometimes its enough to shut the phone down and other times I take out the battery. Its only a matter of time till I throw the damn thing at the wall. My kids are driving me nuts- "Get the Iphone, Dad".

  • Rich C
Awesome news. The new back "feature" on the music player is pretty damn annoying.
  • I agree, Rich. I've also noticed the same 'feature' when browsing photos. Very odd.

One major thing I've recently noticed that I hope is fixed is this: While engaged in a call and pressing the 'Options' button, the 'Go to Homescreen' option is buried under other options, causing you to scroll down just to move to the Homescreen. In that menu (and listed above 'Go to Homescreen') there is an option to 'Lock Screen and Keys'. Now, I don't know about you, but that seems pretty useless with a physical switch alongside the phone that does this very same thing. Anyway, the real problem lies in the fact that when you do switch to the homescreen, the right softkey becomes 'Back' to take you back to the 'Call' screen. That means that whatever button you've placed there for the right softkey disappears. For most of us (as I'm sure this was the factory preset), that button is Contacts. Pretty much the only thing that I ever do while in a call is look up my contacts folder. Not having 'Contacts' available in the initial Options menu, and also taking it away from the homescreen, requires me to do a LOT of digging to pull it up while in a call (obviously since Contacts is my right softkey, I've buried it away in other folders).

If you look at that Options menu while in a call, you'll notice some other stupid choices. For instance, while in a call, there are four buttons displayed on the screen for quick navigation/use. Open Dialer, Activate Loudspeaker, End Active Call, Hold, and Mute are all on the screen while in a call, but they are ALSO the first options in the Options menu, creating an enormous amount of redundancy. Also, having a button on the screen that says 'End Call' is a bit disturbing. There's a shiny red button next to the shiny green one...what do they think we use it for?

Anyway, I would like to see those useless options in the options menu go away, as well as replace the 'End Call' button with 'Go to Homescreen' or 'Contacts' or even 'Switch to Video Call'...anything like that would be perfect.

Ahhh...hahaha, there you have it, my two pence on some annoying oversights concerning in-call navigation that I hope are corrected in due time.

Why can't guys here just say BUG instead of FEATURE (with double quotes)? Did you sign a contract with Nokia not to mention the word BUG in your posts? Wow what a chupaculo.
  • Hahaha. Contrary to what your brain might have you believe, I called it a feature (with single quotes, not double) because I have read on numerous sites that people actually enjoy this 'bug'. I personally do not, hence the quotations to signify my sarcasm in labeling it a 'feature'. Make sense to you?

And I don't suck ass, that's for sure. Well, unless you're female and REEEEALLY hot. Then I'd go to town on the brown. Hahaha.

  • SmoothRevolution
Not if you have a T-Mobile branded phone... :( :(
  • Christian Eichholz
t-mobile branding is not a problem! but you have to pay 25 € to unbranding the phone first...

I'm still waiting on v20!!... bloody stupid 0586199 product code... I'm very near voiding the warranty and just changing product code, this is a joke... I used to be a Nokia fan boy, now I'm just pissed off.
  • aregempak20
st change your product code to 0576119...after update change it back to original product code...nokia will not detect it.

Good to know that a newer update is coming. I am still on firmware v12 (Singapore 0586300). Hopefully, by the time u guys get v30 or sth, we'll get the v20. Singapore is (censored)
  • Jaydee
Dude.. i'm really surprised that u're still on v12, along with some of my friends/acquaintance.. Come on, even if u fail to update with ur own PC, Nokia Service Centre is all over the island which is like a 10 min bus ride away..NO MATTeR WHErE U ARE on this island.. Whats so difficult?? At most the service centre will retain the phone for 2-3hrs n u'll get it back on the same day.. And this past week when i did send my N97 in to have them check on my charging port, they gave it a full '5000 hrs run servicing' even replace the chrome sides for me, which had chipped off chrome due to some fall.. not only that.. they discovered the slider mechanism had some fault even tho' i never notice it(coz u know i always lurve to snap the N97 shut.. gives a satisfying feeling), they had it replaced too (i was like..wow!! Did they know that i juz got myself an iphone 3GS on contract with Singtel??) and also... they replaced my anti glare screen protector with the standard N97 screen protector which i really dun mind coz mine is starting to have scratches n looked all worn out anyway.. Overall, i'd give them 4 thumbs up, a wink n a warm hug.. yeah!! Tho' the charging port problem is still not solved yet.. hahah..!! I'm beginning to feel its the charger problem coz when plugged into my car charger, its all good n' all.. well thats another story anyway.. And if u guys r wondering if the 3GS is gonna replace the N97 as my King phone.. well the answer is NO..its sitting side by side with my N96 as a multimedia option..n games.. really.. I was juz curious about jailbreaking stuffs...I don't know, there's juz something on it that turns me off from making it my main phone..
Anyway... for the love of God.. pls go n update that phone u 'freak'..!! Hahahaa.. c",)
  • Jaydee
Ooopss.. my bad.. Didn't read through ur post that u r no longer living in Sg.. hahahha.. paiseh.. paiseh.. Anyway, if Nokia software updater doesn't work, u might want to try the Ovi Suite software updater.. it might juz work.. c",) oooh... in the first place, pls dun say Singapore is ****** watever that u said in that post.. I think Nokia Singapore PR is doing a great job with whatever resources that they have.. Certainly, they did impress me.. ;)
  • titus1984
Just send to nokia care centre...i did a few days ago and man the difference is huge!
  • Yes I can second that. I did the same and it worked wonders for me
  • freak
    titus1984,
Thanks for the reply, can i send it to any nokia centre (different country)? I am not living in Singapore now.
  • Jaydee
Yes u can send to any Nokia Centre, for a price that is.. but what is that small amount of money if u got urself a better working a thousand Singapore dollar phone.. Its worth it.. FREAK!! c",)
  • Titus1984
I am not too sure. I believe Nokia allow those branded N97 to be updated through nokia care centre. You might want to call the centre and check out what version they have.
  • "if Nokia will provide another firmware update for the N97 by the end of 2010" - ergh, surely they will by that time, but are you sure you meant 2010 there? ;P
  • doh! thanks for catching that!
  • Haha, good catch, Tao. I think Mike is ready for the new year!

Please tell them to include and update to allow the Tmobile 3G network to work.
  • You wouldn't be able to get the t-mobile 3g unless you have the correct bands for 3g in your area.
  • theron
I notice this too, im in a room and all my friends are on o2 or vodafone and they all have 3g and im on gsm still :S is it a nokia thing or a tmobile thing?
  • theron
sorry to double post, but for the uk u can check 3g coverage maps here:

    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/coverage/street-check/

my area actually has no 3g so i might move to another company soon.
