Add Any RSS Feeds To Your N97 Homescreen, I’m Staying Updated With Hockey Free Agency Tomorrow

One of my favorite features of the Nokia N97 homescreen widgets is that you can quickly add your favorite RSS feed to stay up to day with any news you want. The feeds are extremely easy to change out, I change mine a few times a day. For instance I’m a big LA Kings fan and I normally have the RSS feed from my favorite blog on my homescreen along with my email, shortcuts, music, and favorite contacts. But tomorrow is the first day of NHL hockey free agency and the Kings have plenty of cash to spend on some high profile free agents. I won’t have much time to sit in front of a computer throughout the day since I’ll be at work so I’ve set up the homescreen on my N97 with a few more RSS feeds to keep me updated. Keep reading to see how I managed to get the homescreen like the image above.

Subscribe To Feed & Edit

First thing to do is subribe to a feed in the web browser. Almost every news website or blog has an RSS feed. Now go to the RSS feeds section of the browser and hit Options > Edit > Edit.

Here you can edit the feed name and set up your automatic updates. Tap your finger on the Automatic Updates and you can choose Off, 15 minutes, Every Hour, Every 4 Hours, Every day. For tomrrows draft I’ll choose every 15 minutes.

Add To Homepage & View

Go to the Edit area of your homescreen widgets and you’ll see your subcribed feeds added to the list. Each widget allows for the latest three RSS feeds. When you click on the feed it will take you to the list of articles for that feed.

And now you can select the feed that you want to see and read it. If you want to view the full page just select the title and voila.

So there you have it. I won’t miss a beat and I won’t even need to open my computer. In the evening once the dust settles I’ll switch out one of my homescreen widgets to a LA Dodgers blog where they post live game updates. The possibilities are endless, as long as you have an RSS feed. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

  • Hi, very good article! I've just configured a Google News feed for my country, Italy, everything ok! The feeds show up in the homescreen, but i don't know why they don't update automatically: I have to manually enter the widget and click the icon to update the articles... but when I've created the new feed I've selected automatic updates every 15 minutes! :-O

    Any suggestions? Thanks! :-D

PS: I've got firmware 21.0.045, and hard resetted the phone after updating :-P

hey Mike i've been following your site for a while but this is the first time i post here. I got a problem with my n97 after hard resetting it - the rss feed wont come up in the list of homescreen widgets. it tried searching in the interent for a solution but apparently not a lot of people has experienced such thing before so i was hoping to see if you give me some advice.
    Thank you in advance!
  • first thing comes to mind. do you have any rss feeds saved in your web browser?

before i hard reset the phone, it comes with google news and bbc news in the web feed and i am able to to choose them as my homescreen widget. however after the hard reset, all the web feeds are gone so i added some new ones in the web browser but still nth comes out in the 'content list' of homescreen=(

I am trying to do this, everytime I find an rss feed i click on "Add" to add the rss feed, and it isnt showing up in my web feeds folder, then when I try again it says it is already saved to my phone but I dont know where.

I apologise as I am not very good with this type of thing, but i am learning.

One question- everytime my RSS feed wants to update it asks me to select a connection! Is there anyway to set this to automatic?? Thanks
  • In the rss settings you should be able to specify the access point.
